BOOK A P. 495 (p.183) ROBERT FINCHUM MD ELIZABETH RODGERS 21 NOV 1840 COMMENTS: From these dates: census enumerated on 29 Oct 1840; Marriage to Elizabeth Rogers 21 Nov. 1840 (3 weeks later) We might think that Anna Lowe was still living and with Robert when enumerator visited them. She May have been ill/dying even then.. (or did Anna die earlier and Elizabeth is there with the children??) There are three children unaccounted for: a boy born 1830-1835 and two girls born between 1830 and 1835. Are these three children of a prior marriage of Robert? to Anna Lowe? Anna may have died in childbirth when Sarah was born.... Don't really know age of Anna Lowe..If this is her first marriage, she could be as young as 16 in 1833 or as "old" as 25. (b. 1808-1817) (Census records indicate Cemetery monument, Samaria Cemetery, N.E. Paragon, Ind. HISTORY: According to People's guide of Morgan County,1874(R1977.251C Finchum, Rob't;farmer; weight, 340; 1 1/2 m s e Eminence. Born in E. Tenn 1815; settled in M.C. 1829 Dem. Prot. HISTORY: History of Owen Co.,Ind./Harrison Twp.(pp.812-816) tells about Cave Springs where Wm. Asher erected a mill abt 1828. other owners were Ricketts,John Gray...Last was Robert Fincham who ran mill until 1867 when it was abandoned. He operated a distillery in connection with the mill, but never realized a fortune from the venture. HISTORY: History of Morgan County says Robert Finchum entered land in M.C. in the thirties. Poll tax payers of 1842 included Robert Finiham. LAND:There are records of many land transactions for Robert in Monroe,Morgan,Owen, and Putnams counties. COMMENTS:most of the Finchum's in Morgan Co. now(1886) come from 2nd marriage to Elizabeth Rogers. There was a number of Finchum -Rogers marriages. I (WAF,Jr) interviewed John Finchum at his home in Wilbur in 1972. He "remembered" many things...some of which have "proved out"....He says Robert had two brothers in Ind. & Ralph went to Illinois...David (son) went to Mo.(found him in Mo. cens.). He says "original" family came from Island of Elbe off coast of Ireland and landed in South Carolina. Some with George Rogers Clark Expedition. He says Robert used to ship hogs and whiskey from Spencer on flat boats down to New Orleans. Robert and all of his sons were excellent log- rollers. He rode a very large big black stallion. He used an axe in each hand when chopping down trees. He died from injuries suffered when a tree fell on him at age 74. They had to remove a window to get him out of house after he died. John's father, James Madison, used to refer William Riley as "half brother Bill" John thinks that Robert was married in Tenn. and lost wife before moving to Ind. (OTHERS SAY ROBERT WAS MARRIED AROUND GOSPORT BEFORE HE MARRIED ANNA LOWE??) The "connection" to William Finchum (of NC and Tennessee) as his father is so far just circumstantial... Robert was born in Tenn or NC...The only Finchum in the 1830 census of Tenn. is William and he has children with him that are right age to include Robert, Elijah, and Josiah who have been found in Indiana. And those who stayed in Tenn. Two James and a William..are they all children of William or is the older James his brother?? See "Tennessee" records for descendents of The two James and William. Josiah has been found only once with Jessee Rogers family and a young Elijah. Where was he before? Did he go by a different name? Elijah who seems to be brother of Robert was married in Washington co. Tenn in 1827 and is living in Morgan Co. , In. in 1830 census. Robert and Elijah bought land side by side in Monroe co. IN and later in Morgan co., IN (side by side.) PUTNAM CO. LAND RECORDS GRANTOR: FINCHUM, ROBERT WARRANTY DEED MARCH 19, 1876 $850 PT. E 1/2 S.E. QR. AND PT W. 1/2 S.E. QR.
