Swofford, 1159 Lehman, Houston, TX 77018 Dec. 18, 1991 Dear Arnold: Delighted to hear from you. My book "Swafford/Swofford Families of America" was published in 1975 and all copies of it have been sold. I did preserve the original pages and xerox copies of them can be made. There have been numerous additions and changes made to my master copy of the book since 1975 and copies of some of those revisions can be made but a number of revisions were written in the margin or added on a handwritten additional page or more. My book does list a John L. Swafford born in 1815 in North Carolina, probably in Randolph County. Henry County, Indiana marriage records list a John L. Swafford and Eleanor Swafford marriage 10/30/1836. They were listed living near his parents in the 1840 Henry County , Indiana Census. John was listed at the home of his father in the 1850 Wabash County, Indiana along with three children but Johm's wife was not listed and had apparently died. John has not been located in the 1860 census but he enlisted in the Federal Army in 1861 at Wabash, Indiana and it listed his age as 44. He was killed in action while carrying the flag at the Battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi on 5/22/1863. They had at least five children and possibly as many as eight. I am wondering if the Mary Florence E. Swafford listed on your pedigree chart might be the same person as Eleanor. I show that their daughter, Martha Ann Swafford, was born in October 1842 in Indiana. She was listed at the home of Joseph Vansuator in the 1850 Wabash County, Indiana Census, relationship unknown. Martha Ann was listed in the 1860 Wabash Census at the home of Mary Owen and Martha was listed as a servant. Martha apparently married twice but the name of her first husband is not known. She secondly married Alfred L. Swigert in 1890 and they were listed in the 1900 Woods County, Oklahoma census at the home of her brother, Daniel D. Swafford. The census recorded that Martha had six children but only four were then living according to the 1900 census and none of their names are known. Her children were apparently all by her first marriage. Martha and Alfred reportedly had no children. Your chart shows that Martha Ann married Giles Wells in 1867. Do you feel that Giles Wells was her first husband and the father of all six of her children? Do you know the names of her children? I have a typed copy of a couple of John L. Swafford's letters written to his brother in 1858 and 1861. Do you have any information about any of John's brothers or sisters? John was the son of Enoch Swafford born 1794 in Randolph County, North Carolina and Mary Frazier born 1795 in North Carolina. Enoch died in 1867 in Wabash County, Indiana. Mary was listed in the 1870 Wabash census but not found in 1880 and may have died. John L. was the oldest of their nine children. Yes, I would like very much to have a copy of the Swafford names from the Indianapolis City Directories when you have them available. Thank you for writing. I have been researching the Swafford/Swofford clan for 40 years and it never seems to get dull. I am looking forward to hearing more from you. Sincerely, Ray C. Swofford From "Swafford/Swofford Families of America" by Ray C. Swofford page 144 12 a. John L. Swafford born in 1815 in North Carolina, probably in Randolph County. He was listed living with his parents in the 1840 Henry County, Indiana densus, his wife 20-30, one male under 5, and one female under 5. The 1850 Wabash County, Indiana census listed John and his three children at his father's home but John's wife was not listed and had apparently died. John has not been located in the 1860 census. He enlisted in the Federal Army, Company F, 8th Regiment, on 8/25/1861 at Wabash, Indiana and his age was listed as 44. He was killed in action at Vicksburg, Mississippi on 5/22/1863.
