Papa FAMILY LIFE: The following was found in the papers left by Maggie Gladys Wells Finchum after her death in 1972. It has been transcribed by her son Willis Arnold Finchum. ******************************************************************************* My Mother's maiden name was Annie Loyall, born Nov 29, 1873 in Indianapolis, Ind. My Daddy , William Henry Wells was born Aug. 8, 1871 in Huntington County, Ind. Thet were married on Dec. 13, 1893 Clara Alice was born Oct 30, 1894 in Indianapolis, Ind. Hettie Grace was born Jun2 29, 1896 in Indianapolis, Ind. Lillie May was born Nov. 1, 1898 in Indianapolis, Ind. Maggie Gladys was born July 23, 1902 in Indianapolis, Ind. William Leonard was born Oct. 22, 1906 in Cincinnati, Ohio My Mother had one brother, Benjamin Franklin Loyall and some half sisters and half brother. I don't know their names. My Daddy had three brothers, George, John, Bert and one sister Mary Elizabeth Florence- called Dolly. My Daddy was a machinist by trade but he also did farm work, he liked to take pictures and develop and print them. He liked to take walks with us. He loved all children and he taught Sunday School. He always helped with the housework and took care of us and Page 2 Mother when she was sick, which was a great deal of the time. My mother was sick most of the time I can remember her. Mother loved to cook and sew and did whenever she could, many times when she was not really able. She taught us to sew and cook. We always called our Mother "Mama" and our Daddy "Papa" when we were children They taught us our A, B, Cs and numbers before we went to school. Christmas and birthdays were always special eventa at our house. Everyone had gifts for everyone at Christmas and each one got a gift from each one on their birthday. It was never anything expensive and many times homemade, but we knew it was given with love, so we really appreciated whatever it was. Sunday afternoons were fun, because whenever weather permitted Papa took us for a walk. Sometimes we would go to the woods and pick violets, purple, yellow, and white Dutchman's Breeches, Spring Beauties. Jack in the Pulpit. Papa knew a plant he called Turkey Peas, which looked like a little onion but was hard. He would peel them with his pocket knife and we would eat them. They had a "Nutty" flavor. Also we would find May apples and ground cherries. On winter Page 3 Sunday afternoons, he would let the fire in the coal heater burn down to red coals, so there was no smoke, then get the old corn popper and pop corn over the red coals with the stove door open. It was really good. Sunday evenings, the icecream wagom would come along our street and Papa would take a big vegetable bowl and get it full of icecream, dipped with a big ball dipper. We would have the desert dishes cooling in a dishpan of cold water so the icecream wouldn't melt too fast. We didn't have an ice-box, but had a bucket on a rope which we let down into the well-hole through a loose board in the well platform. to keep butter, milk and any left overs. We had a window box to keep them in winters. It was mounted on the window sill outside and you just raise the window- to put things in or take them out.
