Mrs. Finchum laughed as she related, "I'll never forget that day! We had two wagon loads of furniture, one following the other, and when the river of the first wagon became lost, he insisted that I take the reins, and after winding around through narrow mud roads I finally found Beech Grove." "We arrived about noon, and I never saw so much mud in all my life!" she exclaimed. Mr. Finchum came to work for the New York Central's Big Four Shop, September 1, 1908. He worked there 40 years and 4 months, and retired in 1948. "Yes, I remember those early days well," he recalled. "Everybody was happy. We did have awful cold winters then. I never will forget the time that Ed Hale stepped off into a snow drift and went in over his head. We thought we'd never get him out. "And, Elmer, do you remember Big Ben? My, he was a high stepper." "Yes, I remember," said Mr. Finchum, nodding. But his wife had not heard him, she was going back into the past, relating how she would hitch Big Ben to their rubber-tired surrey with the fringe on top and it took only 20 minutes to go from Beech Grove to Prospect Street in those days. "One night, Elmer went to Lodge," said Mrs. Finchum, leaning closer, "and he missed the last street car home. That was some night. He called me and I told him I'd come after him, so I hitched up Big Ben and went over to Mr. Bailey's to get one of the boys to go with me. Lowell, it was always Lowell, went with me and he held the lantern while I held Big Ben's reins. I had a gun lying between us on the seat, and Big Ben ran most of the way to Prospect Street." "I could hear his hoof-beats long before they arrived for me," chuckled Mr. Finchum. Mrs. Finchum continued that she could remember so many things. "Oh, I must tell you about the candles! September 2, is Elmer's birthday, so in 1909 I baked him a birthday cake and I couldn't buy a candle anywhere in Beech Grove. I took nasturtium blooms and fastened them all around the top of the cake with toothpicks, and I do believe it was the prettiest cake I ever saw." As Circulation Manager of this area, Mrs. Finchum was employed by the Indianapolis News for thirty years. "And did you know, my Father's lantern was the brightest lantern in Beech Grove? Yes, it was!" "That's right. That's right," seconded Mr. Finchum.
