And I also got your address and wrote you in November to ask you about it, but it must have been an old address (Atascadero, CA). How ironic that you have now found us. .My mother-in-law is a granddaughter of Charles Albert Wells, brother of your William. She has not been as interested in research as I, but when I found your submission and showed her the names, she was excited to see them. Apparently Charles (and maybe a younger sister) was raised in the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home, and he met his wife there. Norma figured with that kind of background no one would be able to trace them. However, I found their names in an index of records of the Home, so there is obviously more information available. We are in Indianapolis, where Norma was raised. Where are you now located? I would be very interested in your sources, if you are willing to give that information. Thanks so much for contacting us. This may be a lengthy letter but I want to share it with you. How is Norma Wells O'Connor related to Charles, daughter or grandaughter? I guess I really write this letter to Norma and hope she will enjoy reading it! We write also in sheer desperation of any photos of Giles Wells. He is the twin brother of my anscestor, Miles Wells, who was killed with over 1500 other Union soldiers when they were going home to Ohio after the war. The story of the Sultana Steamship is a sad one. The boilers on the boat blew up. This is actually America's worst Mari-time or Marine accident and more people were killed than on the Titanic. Circumstances at that time, however, led newspapers to do little coverage on the story (just after Lincoln's assisnation, the war was over, this happened "out west" not out in the populated "east", etc....) Miles' wife remarried and supposedly the new husband did not want the children so we know that 2 of Miles's children were given to another family. Little of this history or photos were passed on down about Miles. I suppose the children just knew he was killed in the Civil War and that was it. My research has also led me to believe that Miles and Giles had another brother, Cyreneus, who was also killed in the Civil War but I have to do more research to verify this information. Cyreneus was also a twin; he had a sister Nancy. Believe it or not, I, too am a twin!! If you read my story on the Wells family website, you will know how cirumstances occured the way they did for my husband and I in October of 1999. Had that not, most of the following information would not have been found. In fact alot of information was gleaned from the original applications that were not available just 3 years ago. The Indiana Soldier's & Sailor's Home had called the Indiana Archival Unit and asked them if they wanted all these hundreds of old records. Had they not called or had Indiana State not wanted them; they would have been destroyed! You have no idea what it was like to see the original applications completed and signed by Martha Ann Swafford Wells. I hope that you printed out a copy of my story and she knows why the 2 youngest children were sent to live at the "orphanage". Alot of children sent there were not orphans. The home was built to also help since so many widows could not provide for their children. If Norma is interested, I would be MORE THAN HAPPY, to provide her direct information off the application which is in the name of CHARLES ALBERTUS WELLS, although discharge records and other documents I have from Martha's admission to the Veteran's Home shows he used the name Albert. Charles Albertus Wells was right handed, he had had the measles and whooping cough, he was listed as trustful and truthful.....etc.....It was just nice to see the application. He was admitted on August 30, 1887 along with Mary Elisabeth Florence Wells, his sister. Their father had died on December 10, 1886. Martha Ann Wells, their mother was still living. She later remarried an Alfred Swiggert in July of 1889 and then a William Gregory in August of 1912. I was able to find out some information off Mr. Gregory's Civil War pension information. Martha Ann was admitted to the Indiana State Soldier's Home (or Vet's Home) in Lafayette, Indiana on May 14, 1928 and died on December 31, 1928 from Influenza and Bronchial Pnemonia (at the age of 85.) With the copies from the State Soldier's Home was a copy of a letter written by a Mrs. Jean Hayes, 2626 S Lyons St, Indianapolis 41 Indiana written in 1959 requesting information on Martha Ann Swafford Gregory. Jean Hayes indicated that this was her great grandmother. Does Norma know the connection to her? I also have a copy in the Pension records signed by Albert Wells in 1929 and he lists his address as Indiana Soldier's and Sailor's Home in Knightstown, Indiana. Did he work there? He was listed as "age limit" in 1890 when he left the home after being admitted in 1887. (Age limit in those days was 16. We saw no record of release for Mary but her mother applied for minor pension in 1890 so we think Mary went back home to live since Martha had remarried in 1889. You asked about the church on Hoyt Avenue. Believe it or not, we looked at every church listed in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1885/1886 in the Polk book. The only church listed with a Hoyt Street border was the First Methodist Protestant Church. It appears from a currect directory that the church and location no longer exist. I have not received any information from Depauw University about records. Maybe if you decide to pursue this you can confirm any membership. I believe that Giles and Martha did not live in Indianapolis for even a year prior to Gile's death and maybe that is why they moved to Indianapolis because of his health. I hope Norma will be interested in this information. She needs to know that Giles and Miles Wells fought together in the Ohio 102nd Infantry Co H together. Only 1/2 of that regiment was sent to the relief of Athens and Miles went not Giles. Miles was captured along with many of the men of that regiment as well as other regiments. He was sent to the Cahaba prison and then died on the ship explosion coming home. Giles, I'm sure, was never the same after the war considering the GAR records say he was in general poor health due to exposure. Giles had a son William Henry. Miles had a son William Miles. I do so hope she has a picture of Giles. We are not even sure if Miles' son even knew that his father died on this great ship disaster as that history was never passed down. Giles and Miles father was John I Wells although sometimes the documents look like John J Wells and their mother was Leana Wells. That is all we know for now other than they were all from New York. Thank you again Gwen for your time. I hope you get a chance to talk to Norma soon and wish her our best. I hope to hear from you soon. I need no further lookups in Indiana right now because my goal of finding descendents of Giles is what I was really seeking in hopes that someone had something on Giles. I need to begin to continue my pursuit now on Miles Wells and what happened to his children. Know that the Civil War had a great impact on the children of John and Leana Wells. Warm Regards, Jeanette Wells Schmalzbauer g-g grandauther of Miles Wells |
