ETTIE W F 9 DAUGHTER IN IN IN OBITUARY: Weekly Journal Crawfordsville, Indiana (Contributed) In the presence of life's realities and activities we are constantly brought face to face with death. No class, no age, no conditions in life are exempt. We have been painfully made to realize this today, in the passing away of our dear friend and neighbor. Etta Gardner, daughter of George and Elizabeth Gardner, was born at Bainbridge, Ind., Oct. 20, 1870, and died July 19, 1923. She was united in marriage to Walter C. Whitaker, Jan. 18, 1900. No children came to bless this home, but the strong true love of a devoted mother God had planted in the heart of this woman prompted she and her husband a few years ago to take into their home and hearts the husband's little niece, Anna Louise Finchumn, and to this child she gave her most devoted care, especially in her school work. She enjoyed the companionship of this child some six years or more and when deprived of her, Etta's interests in life waned and the decline in her health was quite perceptible. In a short time they again took into their home anaother niece, Viola Finchumn, who is residing with them at the present time and who has kindly assisted in the care and comfort of Mrs. Whitaker in her long illness. She united with the Christian church when in her young womanhood, to which she has ever remained most faithful and to which she has ever given both of her time and means most unstintingly. She was a loyal member of the Christian Aid Society. She was kind and thoughtful of others, so appreciative of every kindness shown to her. Her last days on earth were full of suffering yet she bore it all with patience and resignation. She was a true servant of the Lord, a loving wife, a kind friend and neighbor and ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. She has been most tenderly nursed by her devoted husband, her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ed Hays and Mrs. Laura Finchumn and a niece, Mrs. Henry Vanmeter. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Friday afternoon, conducted by the regular minister, Rev. Hale Overstreet of Indianapolis. Honorary pall bearers were Mesdames Harry Layman, Lee O'Mulane of Crawfordsville, Elmer Hostetter and Elton Armstrong of New Market, Mrs. Effie Owens of Russellville, Miss Cora Hyten of Roachdale, Mrs. John Wilson, Mrs. Will Welch and Mrs. James Welch of Parkersburg. Flower bearers were Margaret Fink, Edith Wilson, Caroline Sanders and Mattie Reed. Active pall bearers were Elmer, Woody, John and Isaac Finchumn, Henry Vanmeter and Robert Carmichael, all of Indianapolis. The Ladies' Quartet of Russellville furnished special music. Interment took place in the Masonic cemetery at Crawfordsville. [Elmer, Woody, John and Isaac Finchum are all nephews of Walter; Henry Vanmeter is husband of Rose Finchum Vanmeter, niece of Walter; Robert Carmichael is husband of Bessie Finchum, niece of Walter]
