Note: .OBITUARY: Weekly Journal, Crawfordsville, Indiana (Contributed.) Newton J. Whitaker was born in Owen county, Indiana, Aug. 22, 1833, and died at the home of his son, Walter C. Whitaker, in Parkersburg, Ind., at 9:30 a. m. , Saturday, Feb. 13, 1909, aged 76 years, 5 months and 21 days. He was married to Jane Chenowith Jan. 4, 1855, and to this union were born two children. He was deprived of the companionship of this wife May 7, 1858. He was again married to Sarah A. Hamilton, Jan. 12, 1860, and to this union were born 11 children, seven sons and four daughters, three sons and four daughters now survive the father. He was deprived of the second wife Oct. 22, 1896. Shortly after this he came to live with his son, Walter C. Whitaker, at Parkersburg, and has ever since made his home there, until the time of his death. He and his wife united with the Baptist church, near their old home, in Morgan county; and afterward placed their membership with the people of the Christian church at Parkersburg. He always attended church services as long as health permitted him to do so, but of late years he had become so feeble that he was not able to get beyond the home limits. He leaves one brother, Levi Whitaker, of Paragon, Ind., three sons, John L. of Mooresville, Ind.; Davis S., of Kearney Neb.; and Walter C. of Parkersburg, Ind.; and four daughters, Mrs. Emma Finchman, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Laura Finchman, of Metcalfe, Ill.; Mrs. Viola Cushman, of Lincoln, Neb.; and Mrs. Jennie Hays, of Murdock, Ill. Besides these there are eighteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also a host of other relatives, friends and neighbors, to mourn his death. Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church at Parkersburg at 2 o'clock p. m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, by Rev. W. D. Headrick, of Indianapolis.
