Hugh Fleming History of Washington County, 1884 February, 1887 - Hugh Fleming, prominent old citizen of BrownTownship, was a native of Ontario County, New York, where he was bornJuly 8, 1807, being the fifth child of a family of nine children bornto James Fleming and Jane McNeal, who were natives respectively ofIreland and Pennsylvania, and came to Indiana about the year 1817, andsettled in Washington County on the farm now owned by Hugh Fleming.Hugh always lived at the old homestead, and received a limitededucation in the primitive log schoolhouses of his day. October 10,1860, his marriage with Angeline Jean was solemnized, and to theirunion the following four children were born: Jane, Mary E. (who wasunited in marriage to Millard Jean), Phoebe E. and Bellona. Previousto the date of his marriage he followed wagon-making and distillingconnection with his farming, since which time he has quit distilling.He has been quite successful in the various pursuits and owned a largefarm, about half of which was in timber. Mrs. Fleming and children aremembers of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In politics he was aRepublican, having been connected with the party since itsorganization.
