Notes
a. Note:   Posted to Longwell List 27 Nov 1998 by Scot Benner in The Craig News on May 23, 1918 Mrs. Ellen Longwell Ellen, daughter of Mark Slocum and his wife, was born in Ohio, Dec.25, 1838, and departed this life May 14, 1918. In 1856 she was married to Joseph Yealy and they spent their married life in Ohio and Kentucky.Three girls were born to this union, Minerva and Mary Ann, who died ininfancy, and Almedia Belle, who is now the wife of J. W. Ustic. Joseph Yealydied in the year 1860. In 1862 she was married to Stephen Longwell andthey came to Nebraska in 1868. To this union were born seven sons and one daughter, and there are 43 living grandchildren and 12great-grandchildren. the children of the second union were: F. Bently, died 1915: JohnH., of Tekamah: Edward K., Bancroft: Stephen, died in infancy: W. Arthur, Craig: L. Oscar, died 1914: O. Earl, Decatur: Ella M. Osborne,Herman. In early life Mrs. Longwell united with the Methodist Episcopal churchand as she and her husband so often said in class meeting 'they did notleave their religion on the other side of the Missouri river', but at theirhome was always a warm welcome for the Nebraska pioneer circuit rider, andthey were intimately acquainted with nearly every early Methodist preacherin Nebraska, being frequent attendants at camp meetings, far and near. They have the honor of it being in their home that the Alder Grove S. S.was organized in 1870 and a short time afterward at their home before aschool house even was available, the Methodist church was organized which has meant so much to this community. Mrs. Longwell was always active inall church services and her prayers and testimonies have been a sacredmemory and a benediction to all who have grown up in the neighborhood.Surely of this sainted mother it was written: Blessed are the dead which die inthe Lord, yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors andtheir works do follow them.
