a. Note:   rated to North Carolina. They no doubt traveled the path opened in Lived in early Tennessee befor it was a state, area was know as Washington Co. NC. He took up acreage in Sullivan Co. and is on many records in Washington Co. 1788 He was a member of the Washington co. NC, (now TN) 1789 Granted land in Burke Co., NC of 200 acres. See Maps in file 1795 He was a Captain in the militia of Washington Co., NC (now TN) 1796 He was living in Carter Co., TN 1799 He was appointed Sheriff of Carter Co., TN by Gov John Sevier He headed the tax lists When Carter Co. was created, his land fell barely in that county, in the area of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. He was a member of this church. He was court magistrate for Carter Co. and went on to rise to rank of Major in that county, second only in command to Nathaniel Taylor, who later became a Brig. Gen. 1808 He was reelected to position of Sheriff and High Sheriff of Carter Co., TN As more counties were formed from existing counties, he served in Rutherford Co., and eventually in Bedford Co. Around 1807-1809 Abraham Byler and Thomas Maxwell divided a 640 acre grant of Nathaniel Taylor, in Middle TN, and moved there from Carter Co. Their land first fell in Williamson Co., TN, but when Bedford Co. TN was created, their acreage fell inside the NW corner of Bedford Co.
