a. Note:   Her father's name is on her wedding certificate; the civilian version
 has him as Alfred WILTON, the military version as John WILTON, an
 engineer.
 Letter to WT Davies c/o Lloyds Bank St Helier, dated 10 June 1926
 from the War Office, ref 72323/40 (C.2.). Sir, In reply to your letter
 of the 28th ultimo, I am directed to inform you that according to the
 records of the Department the late Mrs AF Davies, formerly Army
 Schoolmistress, was born at Sheffield on 16th January 1859. Details as
 to the late Mrs Davies' parentage should be obtainable from the birth
 certificate which could possibly be furnished by the
 Registrar-General, General Register Office, Somerset House, London
 WC2. (para) I am to add that according to the records of the
 Department Mrs Davies served continuously in India from 18th December,
 1883, to 31st December, 1906. (This does not check with birth of PWWD
 in Dover 1890 or AFD in Aldershot 1903).
 The General Register Office returned PWWD's fee on 27 Sept 1926, as
 a search of births of "Alice Frederick Wilton" in Sheffield for the
 years 1857-61 had found no such entry. A memo says "The Registration
 of Births was not compulsory prior to the year 1875". Suggests trying
 to find a Baptismal Certificate. A search of the IGI for Yorkshire,
 Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire failed to find this record. A search of
 the 1861 census for the Sheffield area also failed.

c. Note:   The India Office Register of Marriages at Coonor (now in Tamil Nadu)
 gives her father's name as Alfred Wilton, and witnesses as G. Mills,
 F. Willis & E. Mills - the chaplain was N.J. Brannon. The Service
 Departments Register for the Command of the 2nd Bn. Royal Fusiliers
 gives her occupation as School Mistress, Royal Fusiliers, father as
 John Wilton, an engineer. Witnesses were T. Mills and F. Willis.
 Chaplain was R.J. Brandon. William Thomas Davies was a Sergeant, Royal
 Fusiliers, his father was William Davies, pensioner of 4th Batty. 5
 Bde. R.A. Both were resident in Wellington, both aged 28. Married by
 License in Coonor Church.
