Notes
a. Note:   extract of letter to Frank Step Hockaday 9 Jan 1904 from 16 Gloucester
 Rd, Newton Abbot
The little I was given to understand about our ancestors was gathered
from the conversations of Grandmother & Grandfather Banbury (RINS 1630
& 1631) who as you may have heard, were greatly opposed to my mother
marrying a foreigner as they were
 pleased to call him.
The first Mrs Hockaday quietly came to East Devon with 3 sons whom
she educated herself, in a superior manner of living gave the
neighbours to see she was above the ordinary. The tale goes that they
came from Jersey or Guernsey after changing
their name to Hockaday. What their French name was I have quite
forgotten (elsewhere in given as Laccodaie). I believe they were
refugees & escaped with a few valuables & the little money they could
get. The lands etc were confiscated.
(Elizabeth Hockaday was Frank Step Hockaday's "Aunt Liz".
b. Note:   Norma Leadbetter and the 1881 census list her as born abt 1844 in Launcells. Kingsbury and the Ancestral File have the date as 1837. They all agree she was born in Launcells.
c. Note:   In the household of Richard BANBURY [grandfather].
