Notes
a. Note:   OBITUARY
 MR JAMES WANSBROUGH
The death is recorded to day of Mr James Wansbrough, an old and respected resident of Oamaru, at the advanced age of 83 years. The late Mr Wansbrough was born at Weston-super-mare, Somersetshire, England, in 1826, and in his youthful days was brought up to the business of a plumber. In 1866 he sailed for New Zealand in the Lady Egidia, arriving at Port Chalmers in the following year. Immediately after his arrival Mr Wansbrough made his home in Oamaru, and held the distinction of being of the first journeyman plumber in North Otago. He was connected with many of the buildings which in his day of business constituted what is now termed old Oamaru, and on his own account erected a block in Thames street where now stand buildings occupied by Mr J H Irvine, Sherwin Bro., and others. The buildings, which at the time were considered to be without the precincts of the town, were destroyed by fire in 1875. Mr Wansbrough interested himself a good deal in local and general politics, and at one time sat at the Borough Council table as representative for Thames Ward. He took an active interested also in the affairs of the Wesleyan Church, of which body he was one of the first members in the district and a founder of the local congregation. The deceased gentleman was a prominent Freemason of 50 years' standing, and he held the offices of secretary and treasure and other important offices in Lodge Waitaki. Previous to coming to New Zealand he was sworn in as a special constable on the occasion of the Chartist riots in London in 1848. Mr Wansbrough is survived by a family of five sons and four daughters. His wife predeceased him about nine about years ago pp Oamaru Mail 16 Aug 1909 p4 c8
