Notes
a. Note:   From Marriages--Illinois to 1850, compiled by Dodd, Jordan R, from Early American Marriages: Washington D.C. to 1825. Bountiful, UT: Precision Indexing Publishers: From Illinois, St. Clair County Moore, Catherine Shelton, Cuthbert H. Marriage Date: 18 Aug 1840 In the will of Catherine's grandfather, Thomas L. Moore, from 1842 in Washington County, Illinois, Catherine is mentioned as "Katherine Shelton daughter of Jesse Moore, dec'd." I found this marriage record from St. Clair County, which is directly adjacent to Washington County. In the Probate records for Thomas L. Moore, Cuthbert Shelton is listed as having purchased an oxen yoke from the estate for $41, and a well bucket for $2.50. Also in the probate records are several mentions of Hall Shelton, serving as an appraiser and as purchasing a couple of items. On the 1840 census in Washington County, 40-49 year old Hall Shelton is listed next door to Thomas L. Moore. Catherine's brother David Thomas Moore married a Sarah Moore, also in 1840. Presumably Hall Shelton is the father of apparent siblings Cuthbert and Sarah. I am certain that all this shows that Catherine was first married to Cuthbert Shelton, even though this was not listed in the Garr book from 1894. Presumably something happened to Cuthbert after 1842, since Catherine remarried in 1848. There are no records to indicate that Catherine and Cuthbert had any children.- RW ======================== From the book "Genealogy of the descendants of John Gar, or more particularly of his son Andreas Gaar, who emigrated from Bavaria to America in 1732," by John Wesley Garr and his son John Calhoun Garr; published in 1894: Catherine is listed as person #1967 and James is listed as #5864. Catherine is listed with her parent's family on page 112: ______________________________________________________ Name Birth Death _____________________________________________________ Catherine Moore June 18, 1828 June 1, 1873 James House Jan. 10, 1822 Jan. 16, 1869 M.- Dec. 28, 1848- Ill.
