Notes
a. Note:   Eliza Waggener would have been the youngest child born to her parents, James Jones Waggener and Elizabeth Garnett. I don't have her exact date of birth, but from the census records that I think she is counted on, and the fact that she was apparently under 18 years old when she was married in 1824, I believe she was born between 1806 and 1808. Her parents were living in Culpeper County, Virginia at that time, and she must have been born there. Eliza's parents moved to the area of Todd County, Kentucky in 1820 and it seems almost certain that she went there with them. Eliza would have been 10-15 years old at the time. Her father died in 1822 in Todd County, and Eliza probably remained there in the home of her widowed mother. She married Thomas Iverson Walker in Christian County, Kentucky on July 20, 1824. Christian County is directly adjacent to Todd County and is generally the same area. The census records seem to show that Eliza and Thomas were living in Todd County in 1830 and 1840. It also appears that Eliza's widowed mother, Elizabeth Garnett Waggener, was counted in their household for both censuses. I don't know precisely when Eliza or her husband died, but from the various documents it appears that they had on-going health problems and that they both apparently died about 1847. This would have been before their youngest children had grown up. In the obituary of Eliza's daughter Elizabeth Shreve, it was mentioned that she was raised by her cousin George C. Waggener in Hancock County, Illinois. She and her sister Mary Frances are both listed in George's household there, in the 1850 census. In the obituary for Mary Frances Botts, it was mentioned that she had come to Hancock County when she was fourteen years. This would have been 1846 or 1847. In the account from Russell Walker, he mentions that his grandfather Thomas Iverson Walker, Jr. became an orphan when he was four years old, which would have been about 1847. These seem to confirm that both Eliza and Thomas passed away in this time period. Rick Waggener ============ The following was sent to me by Merwyn Walker. It is an excerpt of an account written by Russell O. Walker, and for the most part covers his knowledge of the family of Thomas I. Walker, Jr. and Mary E. Atchison, Russell's paternal grandparents. This part of the account focuses on the family of Thomas Walker, Sr. and Eliza Waggener, Russell's great-grandparents. ------------------------------- The Carthage Republican December 28, 1932 My Ancestors by Russell O. Walker The present knowledge of my predecessors is somewhat abbreviated. Here I will attempt to give information concerning three consecutive generations. I will begin with Thomas I. Walker, my grandfather. He was the son of Thomas I. Walker and Eliza Wagoner, my (great) grandparents. They (Thomas and Eliza) were native farmers of Todd County, Ky. Grandpa was born August 20, 1843. He had three sisters, Mary, Lizzie, and Luda; and three brothers, James, St. Clair, and William. Mary, his oldest sister, married William Botts, of Carthage, Illinois. With her (Mary) he (Thomas Jr.) made his home from the time he was made an orphan at four years of age until he married. Lizzie, his second sister married Joshua Shreve, who also lived in Carthage. Luda, his youngest sister, married William Clark of Macomb. Uncle Will is still living. During the Civil War all four brothers enlisted, Grandpa responded to the call of the Union and enlisted in the 148th Illinois Voluntary Infantry, serving a little over a year, meanwhile participating in a few light skirmishes. The other three brothers enlisted in the Confederate army. James , the eldest brother, served four years, but St. Clair was killed in the Battle of Shiloh. Upon leaving the army, William became a minister and was still preaching in Kentucky the last time I heard from him..... =============== In the 1820 Virginia Census of Culpeper County, Virginia, page 103; found at ancestry.com image #37 of 53. Eliza seems to be listed in the household of her father "James Waggoner, as one female 10-15 years old. =========== From Dodd, Jordan. Kentucky Marriages to 1850. [database online] Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 1997: Spouse 1: Waggoner, Eliza A. Spouse 2: Walker, Iverson Date: 20 Jul 1824 Location: Christian County, Kentucky =========== These marriage record documents, from Christian County, Kentucky, were sent to me by Frieda Winkler: ******* Know all men by these presents, that we Iverson Walker and Robert G. Jno Clark (Robert Garnett Kay was Eliza's nephew, the son of Eliza's older sister Sarah and her husband James Kay. RW) --------------- ****** To this Clerk of Christian County. This is to justify that I Elizabeth Waggener do lively and willfully consent to the marriage of her Daughter Elizabeth A. Waggener with Mr. Iverson Walker - of the County of Todd. Given under my hand this the 17th July 1824--- Elizabeth Waggener Witnessed Stokeley T. Waggener Ann Waggener (Stokeley Towles Waggener was Eliza's brother and Ann was his wife. RW) ---------------- ****** Christian County Sct.; This is to certify that the rites of Matrimony were solemnized on the 20th of July 1824 between Iverson Walker and Eliza A. Waggoner - according to law by me a minister of the gospel duly licensed for that purpose. - Witness my hand this 24th day of July 1824 Will Tandy =========== In the 1830 Federal Census of Todd County, Kentucky; from Ancestry.com, image 41 of 68; Eliza seems to be counted in the household of her husband, "Thomas I. Walker" as 1 female 15-19 years old. (I believe that the wrong box was checked and that Eliza was actually in her 20's. Also listed in the household is 1 female 60-69 years old, who I believe may be Elizabeth's widowed mother, Elizabeth Garnett Waggener.- RW) =========== From a series of transcribed family letters sent to my by Judy Senter, there is a letter written by Elizabeth (O'Neil) Waggener to her son George C. Waggener and his wife. She is the widow of Eliza's brother James Waggener, who died in 1822. The letter is headed: "December 17th, Todd Co, near Trenton." It seems to have probably been written in 1838. Elizabeth has a number of comments about Eliza and her husband "Mr. Walker," who are living nearby at the time, in Todd County, Kentucky. Things are not going well with them. Elizabeth writes: "Mr. Walker has bene very ill with the fever this fall he was not expected to live he got well he spoke of moving to Davis Cty where her father lives but is to bad off they are verry poore they have neither bred not mete for another yeare nor credit. They by altogether from Stokely's store. Reuben sent and got C(L?)orinda and child this fall. Eliza has no help but were they live in a cabin of the widow Davises." (The Stokely mentioned here is Eliza's brother Stokely Towles Waggener, who also lived in Todd County, in Trenton, and ran a store there. Reuben must also be her brother Reuben Garnett Waggener, who at the time was living in Jefferson County, Kentucky. I'm not sure about C(L)orinda, because the name was apparently hard to read, but she must be a daughter of Eliza's. - RW) =============== In the 1840 Federal Census of Todd County, Kentucky; from ancestry.com, image 63 of 66; Eliza again seems to be counted in the household of her husband "Walker, Tho. I." as 1 female 30-39 years old. Again, also in the household is 1 female 70-79 years old, who I believe may possibly be Eliza's mother. ============ From the Todd County, Kentucky Court Records, Volumes G-H, 1844-1858 (FHL US/CAN Film 355931): Page 158 Dated December 14, 1846 On the motion of Thomas I Walker who made oath according to law, and enters into and acknowledged in the ???? of five hundred dollars with William Kay and Truman Runyon his Executors authorized according to law, letters of administration are granted him in dire form of law on the Estate of Eliza Walker, deceased. (This clearly shows that Eliza died by this time, probably less than a month earlier. I am pretty sure that her husband Thomas did not live much longer either, but I was unable to locate a Court or Probate record for him. The William Kay noted here is probably a nephew of Eliza's, the oldest son of her sister Sarah Kay. RW) ============ From a newspaper obituary also sent to me by Judy Senter, of Eliza's daughter Mrs. Elizabeth M. Shreve, who died on February 5, 1905 in Hancock County, Illinois. The obituary reports that Mrs. Shreve was born on March 29, 1838 in Todd County, Kentucky. The obituary reports that: "Mrs Elizabeth M. Shreve, whose maiden name was Walker, was born in Todd county, Kentucky, March 29, 1838. She was left an orphan in early childhood, and was taken into the home and under the protecting care of her cousin George C. Waggener, who lived in this county for many years... There were four brothers and one sister of the deceased, William, James and Garnett Walker, of Kentucky, T. R. Walker, of this county, and Mrs. Clark of Macomb...." ============ From the Tri-County Scribe; dated May 2, 1900; an obituary sent to me by Lyn Botts, for Elizabeth's daughter Mary Frances Botts, who died April 19, 1900: " Mrs. Botts was the daughter of Ivison and Elizabeth Walker and was born in Todd county, Kentucky, Oct. 8, 1832. At fourteen years of age she came to Carthage, Ill. where she grew to womanhood..." (Both Mary Frances Walker and her sister Elizabeth Walker, are listed in the household of their cousin George C. Waggener in the 1850 census in Hancock County, Illinois. From these two obituaries and the census record, it appears likely that both Eliza and her husband Thomas died at a relatively young age and were deceased by 1847. RW)
