Notes
a. Note:   Mary Adelaide Henderson was born on June 25, 1892 in Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan to her parents Archibald Henderson and Mary Elizabeth McManus. Reportedly she was born in the town of Carleton, but the birth records just lists Exeter Township. She was the oldest of six children born to her parents. They were all born in Monroe County, Michigan. Her father was a blacksmith. Both of her parents passed away when they were fairly young. She was about eighteen years old when her father died and she was twenty-one when her mother passed away. She initially went to live with her aunt, Ann (McManus) Brown, in Flint, Michigan in 1910 and she was apparently working as a telephone operator. Several years later she moved to the Detroit area where she got a job as a cook in a boarding house. This is where she met her future husband, James Richard Waggener, Sr. They married on February 23, 1918 in Ecorse, Wayne County, Michigan. Over the next year or so she was living in Detroit with her first daughter Ruth, while her husband was away fighting in World War I. In about 1922 or 1923 they moved to Royal Oak, Michigan which is about ten miles north of Detroit. They lived the rest of their lives in Royal Oak. They had nine children. She was very much involved with the local Catholic Church, the Shrine of the Little Flower. She remained involved for the rest of her life. She worked very closely with Father Coughlin, while he was the Pastor of the church. Adelaide died on November 18, 1959 in Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She is buried in the St. Patrick’s Parish Church cemetery in Carleton, Monroe County, Michigan. It seems to be written in Latin, which makes it difficult to read. It seems to be dated July 9, 1892, and lists Mary's name as, "Marianne Adelheidam." Her parents are listed as, "Archibaldi Henderson" and Elizabeth McManus." It seems to have been witnessed by (or sponsored by) "Joannis Brown" and "Anna Brown." Ann was born Brigette Ann McManus and is Mary's aunt, a sister to Mary's mother Elizabeth. Her husband was named John. The records is signed by a "J. Ronayus," who presumably may be the priest or a church official.- RW ===================== From the Federal Census of 1900, Monroe County, Michigan, Exeter Township, taken June 4, 1900, page 3B; ancestry.com, Monroe County, District #70, image 6 of 42; Mary is listed in the household of her parents: House #53, no apparent address; ----- Mary A.; daughter, female, born June 1892, age 7, single, born- Michigan, father born- Canada, mother born- Michigan ================= From the 1910 Federal Census of Flint City, Ward 1, Genesee County, Michigan, district 15, sheet- 1b/ 2a, taken April 15, 1910, household 27, address- 413 Williams Street; from ancestry.com, images 2-3 of 47. Here is an excerpt talking about Adelaide: "...Of course I had a good wife, Adelaide. She’s dead now. When she was alive she did a lot of charity work. She belonged to a group of women about her age and they collaborated on a lot of things. They cut out a lot of red tape. If someone had some kind of welfare need, they would go right to the people’s house and help them. They used to tell us “she went about doing good,” which she did. When she died in 1959, Father Coughlin was retired, and he came out of retirement to preach at her funeral. He had been the Catholic Priest at the Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, and during the 1930’s he had a radio program every Sunday, when he broadcast to millions. Her funeral was a big one. They were very close and he thought a lot of her, and she thought a lot of him. They were good people..." =============== From the Daily Tribune Newspaper, Royal Oak, Michigan, dated Wednesday November 18, 1959: Mrs. J.
