Note: Ann Murphy Ward was born to her parents Bernard and Margaret Murphy. Ann was born in about July of 1805 in Ireland. I believe she was probably born in County Monaghan, but do not know this for sure. I also believe that she had a brother named John who probably came to America with her and her husband, and eventually settled near to where they lived in Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan. I believe that Ann married her husband John Ward in Ireland, again probably in County Monaghan, and probably in the mid- 1820's. I also believe that shortly after their marriage, they immigrated to the United States, living first for what was probably a short while in Pennsylvania, and eventually settling in the Irish Colony of Stony Creek in Exeter Township. John and Ann had four children that I know of, although I think it likely that they had more. The oldest daughter that I know of, Alice, was born in 1929 in Pennsylvania. The other three that I know of were all born in Michigan, and most likely Exeter Township: Mariah Ann (1840), Ann (1841) and John (1843). Ann and her husband John were farmers. John died in 1860 and Ann lived on, apparently on the farm run by her youngest son John, until her death on April 6, 1874, in Exeter Township. Ann is buried with her husband John in the oldest St. Patrick's Cemetery. Rick Waggener ============= From the 1850 Federal Census of Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan, page 829, taken August 24, 1850, household 44; from ancestry.com, image #7 of 11. Ann is listed in the household of her husband: Ann Warde; age- 46, female, born- Ireland =========== From the 1860 Federal Census of Exeter Township, Monroe County, Michigan, Page 408, household #815, taken July 5, 1860; from ancestry.com, image 8 of 21. Ann is listed in the household of her husband John: Nancy Ward; age- 55, female, born- Ireland (I do not know where the name Nancy came from. I do not have any other record where her name is listed as this. Perhaps this was a middle name or a first name that was rarely used. -RW) ============ From the 1870 Federal Census in Monroe County, Michigan, Exeter Township, Post Office- Monroe, taken June 30, 1870, page 275, household #18: Ward, Ann; age 66, female, occupation- keeping house, born- Ireland, real estate value- $3,000, personal property value- $500; can't read or write; parents of foreign birth ----- John; age- 25; male, occupation- farmer, born- Michigan, parents foreign born ----- Ann; age- 26, female, occupation- at home, born- Michigan, parents foreign born (Ann is living next to Michael McManus, brother to Ann's son-in-law, Owen McManus. -RW) ============ From Division of Vital Records and Health Statistics; Michigan Department of Community Health; Genealogical Death Indexing System, Michigan. I also found the actual images of the state record posted as Michigan Deaths 1867-1897, by the LDS: WARD, ANN Date of death: April 6, 1874 Record Number: 259 Place of death: Exeter County of Death: Monroe Sex: Female Race: White Marital Status: Widowed Age: 69 years 10 months, 0 days Cause of Death: Congestive Chill Birthplace: Ireland Occupation: Housewife Father's Name: Murphy, Barnard Father's Residence: Ireland Mother's Name: Murphy, Margeret Mother's Residence: Ireland =========== From Vital Records, Monroe County, Michigan by Nancy De Graff Toll Charter, St, Patrick's Parish: ****** "Ward, John-- d. Sept. 29, 1860, a. 60 yrs. w. Anne Murphy" This record seems to confirm that Ann's maiden name was Murphy, and that her husband John Ward died about 14 years before Ann. ****** "Ward, Ann-- d. April 8, 1874, a. 70 yrs. h. John Ward" (This record confirms that Ann was the wife of John Ward. -RW) ============ In the oldest cemetery of St. Patrick's, at Exeter and Labo Roads near Carleton, Michigan, I found Ann and her husband John's grave marked with stone with following inscription: Ann Wife of John Ward Died April 6, 1874 Age 71 years (There was more writing, but it is unreadable. -RW) On the other side of the obelisk shaped marker: John Ward Died Sept. 29, 1859 Aged 60 years (This side of the stone is quite worn and difficult to read, particularly some of the numbers. -RW) =========== Also buried in the oldest cemetery of St. Patrick's, is a John Murphy, born abt. 1805 and died 1880. Mike Cunningham has found records that John Murphy was born in County Monaghan, Ireland. Although I know that Ann Murphy was born in Ireland, I do not know that she was born in County Monaghan. I do know that her husband John Ward was born in County Monaghan. It seems very logical to presume that Ann was born in County Monaghan and that she met and married her husband John Ward there, before they immigrated to the United States. It also seems possible that this John is either a brother or cousin to Ann. -Rick Waggener On the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Exeter, the household of John Murphy is very close to the household of Ann and John Ward. I think that there is a very good chance that John Murphy was a brother to Ann, but need a more information to support a connection.
