Note: I do not know much of Eleanor A. Lee Waggener's early life, but I do know that she was born on December 22, 1853 in Jefferson County, Missouri. I do not have her parent's names, but I know she had siblings named George Thomas Lee, Margaret Lee, Charles F. Lee, and Mrs. S. R. Dunham. I know that she initially married Enoch Ross England in 1870, and that they had two sons, Robert Sidney England (1871) and Charles C. England (1880). I know that Enoch passed away in 1880, and the next year she married Stokely Thomas Waggener, on December 14, 1881, in Hanover, Jefferson County, Missouri. Eleanor and Stokely did not themselves have any children, but they raised the two sons of Enoch. Both Eleanor and Stokely were prominent citizens in the town and later city of Festus, Missouri. Eleanor was reportedly a founding member of the Festus Methodist Church. Stokely founded and ran the Waggener Company Store in Festus, for many years. Stokely turned over the management and after his death the ownership of the Waggener Company Store to his two step-sons, Robert S. and Charles C. England. Eleanor is buried with her husband Stokely and her two sons in the Gamel Cemetery in Festus, Missouri. Rick Waggener ============== From somewhere I got Eleanor's middle name as "Orea," but I am not sure where that came from and all the other records I find seem to list her middle initial as an "A." -RW =============== From Ancestry.com. She also is noted to be the only one of the founding members to still be alive at that time. It is also noted that the Waggener family, meaning presumably her and Stockly, were one of several families in 1888, who negotiated the purchasing of the lot and the building of the first church building, which was completed in 1889. ****** In a series of articles written by Gladys Lee Castleberry in 1976, titled "West Side Stories," on page 133, there is a story written about George Thomas Lee after his death. It mentions at the end that "Mrs. Stokley Waggoner" is one of several surviving siblings to George. Others were Charles F. Lee and Mrs. S. R. Dunham. Another sister, Margaret, is described as already deceased. I believe the story is from January of 1939. ============ From the 1940 Federal Census of Festus City, Joachim Township, Jefferson County, district 50-11, sheet 6a, taken April 6, 1940, address- 1039 West Main Street: Waggener, Ellen A.; head of household, owns home/ $7,000, home is a farm, female, age- 86, widowed, hightest school grade completed- 5th, born- Missouri, residence in 1935- same place, did not work last week of March or 1939, received money other than wages or salary Ogle, Winnie; house keeper, female, age- 67, widowed, highest grade completed- 4th, born- Missouri, residence in 1935- same place, worked last week of March/ 60 hours, occupation- housekeeper/ private family, private worker, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $250 ============ I have obtained a copy of the death certificate for Ellen from State of Missouri.
