Notes
a. Note:   Franklin Wolcott Brands was born to his parents, Thomas Herman and Emiline Brands, on January 19, 1854, in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. This was reportedly in the town of Clardy, which no longer exists, but I think was in Jackson Township. Franklin was twice married, first to Nancy Poston on August 23, 1877, in Jefferson County, Missouri. Nancy reportedly died in January of 1880, and they apparently had no children. On October 25, 1882, Franklin married Alice Harriet Waggener in the home of her parents in Rush Tower, Jefferson County. Franklin was listed as a farmer in the 1880 census in Ste. Genevieve County, and he was listed as living in Ste. Genevieve County in the marriage record with Alice in 1882. Reportedly at some point, apparently after this, he worked for the St. Joe Lead Company, which I believe was in St. Francois County, Missouri. In his obituary in 1892, he and Alice reportedly had their home in Festus, Jefferson County. Three children were born to Franklin and Alice: twins Lottie Belle and Lettie Blanche in 1885, and daughter Franklin "Frankie" Wolcott in 1892. Franklin reportedly suffered from Progressive Locomotor Ataxia for some time before his death. This is apparently some sort of nervous system/ muscular disorder, that presumably contributed to his early death. Franklin died on March 7, 1892, at the age of 38, leaving Alice to raise the three young children. Frankie was actually born five months after her father had passed away. Franklin is buried in the Methodist/ Gamel Cemetery in Festus. Rick Waggener ================= From Ancestry.com. Missouri Marriage Records, 1805-2002 [database on-line]. The subject of this obituary was born at Clardy, Ste. Genevieve County, Mo., was the oldest of three sons of Herman and Emiline Brands, the youngest of which died in 1889 and an account of whose demise appeared in these columns at the time. The parents of the deceased having emigrated to this section of the country and settled at an early date in what was that period known as the wilds of the west, it followed that their children, as a result of the scarcity of population, were deprived of the benefits of even a district school until at a more mature age they were, in consequence of the beneficial results of a season of earnest and diligent application to agricultural pursuits, enabled to perfect themselves in what they were so devoted to, viz education and development. The deceased having prepared himself in the pedagogical art, spent nine successful years in the public schools of this county, always proving an earnest and efficient worker and an example well worthy of imitation by those under his care and one admired by all with whom he came in contact. At the close of this lengthy period of well directed impulses, he found it to his physical and financial advantage to accept a situation from the St. Joe Lead Company for which and with whose full appreciation of his honesty and integrity he labored till confined to his bed by Progressive Locomotor Ataxia from which dread disease he suffered for some time previous to his untimely demise. During the course of his sufferings he sought aid through the constant ministering of his talented brother, Dr. A. L. Brands, and having experienced no perceptible changes he entered the Mo. Baptist Sanitarium at St. Louis, but even there medical skill proved of little of no avail and so it transpired that when again under the parental roof with every care and solicitude that it is possible for ready hands and loving hearts to administer his soul took its flight to the great unknown. Mr. Brands was twice married, the first event occurring in 1878 at which time Miss Nancy Poston became his wife, and she having died some years later, he was again married in 1882 to Miss Alice Waggener who with two children, his aged father and mother and his brother, together with a host of friends, are left to mourn his early death. His funeral, conducted under the auspices of the Festus Lodge of I. O. O. F. occurred Thursday, March 10th from his home in Festus. (lengthy editorial not transcribed). ================= Bill Halberstadt sent me another obituary story for Franklin: Franklin W. Brands was born at Concord, Ste. Geneveive County, January 19th, 1854, and died under treatment in St. Louis. March 7th, 1892. For many years he has been a sufferer, but was usually able to transact his business. During the past four months he became worse and, contrary to the opinions of his physicians and friends, irresistibly impressed that he could not live very long. When quite young he joined the M. E. Church South, but did not remain within its pale. Three years ago he joined again Doe Run, and began afresh to serve God. He was a kind hearted man, a loving and devoted son, father and husband. He met death without a fear and expected its approach weeks before in the triumph of faith. He sent word to his family the day he died that he was perfectly resigned, and sent his watch to his aged father, with the message to wear it constantly and when he looked upon it, to think of meeting him in heaven. The family circle is broker. He leaves a wife and two twin daughters, aged parents and a brother. May they all form an unbrokern family circle in heaven where the voice of weeping and sighing shall be heard no more forever. Joseph Stephan Ferstus, March 26, 1892 ================= I have obtained copies of the probate papers for the children of Franklin W. Brands after his death. There is about 65 pages of documents in the file, most of it hand written and not too easy to read. I can only assume that since Franklin was only 38 years old at the time of his death, he did not leave a will. The twins, Lottie Belle and Lettie Blanche were only six years old at the time of their father's death. Their uncle, William Horace Waggener, was appointed their guardian on April 6, 1892. Presumably this was a very short time after Franklin's death. The youngest daughter, Franklin "Frankie" Wolcott Brands, apparently named in his honor, was not born until four months later on August 8, 1892. William H. Waggener was appointed her guardian on September 16, 1892. Since I am not a lawyer and many of the documents are not so easy to read, I can only guess at the purpose and meaning of the documents. It appears that there was a life insurance policy and a 320 acre piece of property in Ste. Genevieve County. I think the property was sold in about 1897. I am guessing that this is where the family was living at the time of his death, although it appears that the widow Alice and her children were in Jefferson County on all subsequent records. I think there were some kind of annual payments made for the support of the children, but it's not real clear what they were with all the different figures and documents. The final settlement and final payment of about $328 each, was made to the twins Lottie and Lettie, shortly after their 18th birthday in April of 1903. The final settlement and payment of about $369 was made to Frankie shortly after her 18th birthday in August 1910. Although William H. Waggener seems to have handled most of the payments and different legal issues, there are the signatures of other relatives on a number of the documents, mostly as witnesses; namely Stokely T. Waggener, James H. Waggener and their mother Alice Waggener.- RW =============== From Jefferson Democrat; March 10, 1892: **** F.W. BRANDS of Rush Tower died in St. Louis hospital last Monday.
