Notes
a. Note:   Raymond Charles Sturman was the third of six children born to his parents, William George Sturman and Martha E. Perrin, on February 6, 1900. He reportedly said that he was born in Arenac County, Michigan, which seems quite likely since he was listed there with his parents about four months later on the 1900 census. I have yet to find a record to verify this, however. By 1910, Ray was living with his parents in Redford Township, Wayne County, Michigan. I believe that this was the old family farm of Ray's grandfather, Charles Thomas Sturman. He had apparently been living there since he immigrated from England in about 1872. This was near to where one of Charles' uncles had settled, Thomas Sturman. Charles died in 1904, and sometime after this, Ray's father William George took possession of his parent's farm. According to Gloria Waggener, this farm was on 7 Mile Road, apparently near Telegraph Road. In the 1920 census, the 19 year old Ray is listed in the household of his older sister Marguerite and her husband Rolland Sturman. Rolland was a 2nd cousin, once removed, to both Marguerite and Ray. He was the grandson of Samuel Sturman, Jr., who was the brother to Ray and Marguerite's great- grandmother, Sarah Sturman. In the 1920 census, Ray was listed as being an automobile salesman. He was working with Rolland, who was also an automobile salesman. Gloria Waggener notes that as far as she can remember, her father Ray always worked for himself. Over the years he seems to have worked a variety of different jobs. In the early 1920's he began a business that involved him picking up and delivering people's laundry, to and from laundry companies. Working at one of these laundries was Christie Anna Knechtges (later known affectionately as "Myma"), who reportedly introduced Ray to her daughter, Margaret Ethel Knechtges. On July 19, 1923, Ray married Margaret in Detroit. They raised three children and remained married until Ray's death in 1984. From 1923 to 1934, Ray, Margaret and family lived in a number of different rented houses on the west side of Detroit. At some point Ray started running his own laundry business. In 1934, the family moved to a farm house on 10 1/2 Mile Road, at the northeast corner of the intersection of Telegraph Road, in Southfield, Michigan. They eventually came to own this house. This road is currently named Civic Center Drive. The house has since been moved and preserved by the City of Southfield. It is currently serving as the office for the Southfield Human Services Department. The current location is 26080 Berg Road, Southfield, Michigan; which is about 1/4 mile east of it's original location. This location was near to where Rolland Sturman's "side" of the family (Ray's brother-in-law) had settled when they immigrated from England in the 1850's and 1860's. (This was Rolland's grandfather Samuel, Jr and Samuel's brother William, who are both buried in the Southfield Cemetery just east on Civic Center Drive.) This area is just about 3 miles north of Redford Township, where Ray's grandfather had lived and Ray grew up. When Ray and Margaret moved to Southfield, Ray continued to operate the laundry in Detroit. In 1939, he started a curtain laundry in a barn behind the 10 1/2 Mile Road farm. In about 1941, the barn with the laundry burned to the ground. Ray rented a store on Wyoming in Detroit and set up his curtain laundry business there. He ran this business until about 1952. At this point Ray started selling venetian window blinds. Later Ray sold home insulation and a number of different home improvement products. He also invented and sold a number of different items, including some kind of curtain ironing machine. Also in about 1952, Ray and Margaret sold the farmhouse in Southfield and moved to a house on Greenfield Avenue in Detroit. In 1954, they moved to a home on Winthrop Street in Detroit. They lived in that house until 1973, when they moved to Avon Township, Oakland County. He and Margaret lived there until they died. Ray died on February 24, 1984, at the age of 84. He is buried with Margaret in the Acacia Park Cemetery, in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
