Note: I have had a fairly difficult time determining the parents of my great-great grandmother, Anna McKenzie. On her death record in 1896 in Michigan, her parents' names were listed as Daniel and Mary McKenzie. Clearly the informant of that record knew little about Anna's father. I found the marriage record for Anna and her husband Alexander McLeod, from 1875, and she listed her parents there as Donald and Mary McKenzie. I found Anna in the household of her apparently widowed mother, in the 1871 census in Ashfield Township, North Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Also there in that household were siblings Alexander and Christina. I have found the marriage records of Alexander (1879) and Christina (1887) in Ashfield Township, and both clearly list their parents names as Donald McKenzie and Mary Cameron. I have now what I am fairly sure is the grave of Donald and Mary, in the South Lochalsh Cemetery in Ashfield Township. They are buried near to the graves of daughter Christina and her husband James Campbell. From the headstone of their grave, I have learned that Donald McKenzie was born in about 1816, in Ross-Shire, Scotland, and that he died on December 3, 1864, apparently in the Ashfield area. Donald died relatively young at the age of 48 and Mary lived another 29 years, until November 14, 1893. Rick Waggener ============== Susan McPhedran sent me the following record: From the Old Parochial Records; Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland Marriages, FHL FIlm #0990656: Date: May 20, 1849 Location: Drumbuie Bride's name: Cameron, Mary Bride's residence: not available Groom's name: McKenzie, Donald Groom's residence: Avernish ============== From the 1851 Canadian Census of Blenheim Township, Oxford County, Ontario, Canada; pages 173- 174, lines 44, 45 & 46: Don' McKenzie; occupation- farmer, born- Scotland, religion- Free Church, age next b-day- 35, male, living in a log house, 1 story, 1 family Mary McKenzie; occupation- wife, born- Scotland, religion- Free Church, age next b-day- 30, female Ann McKenzie; born- Canada West, religion- Free Church, age next b-day- 2, female (I am fairly sure that this is Donald and Mary. In a border crossing record for their son Alexander in 1909, he listed that he was born in Blenheim. I had previously been unable to find Donald or Mary anywhere in either the 1851 or 1861 Canadian Censuses, but with this clue, found this record. The transcriber had written his name as David, but I am quite sure it is supposed to be an abbreviation for Donald. There are five other McKenzies listed on the lines below these entries, including the next line after Ann, for a 62 year old John McKenzie. I believe he is quite likely Donald's father. There does not seem to be anyone who might fit the time frame of a wife, but a couple that might be Donald's siblings.- RW) ============== Donald was buried with his wife Mary in the South Lochalsh Cemetery, in Ashfield Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. The cemetery is on Highway 86 or Amberlry Road, between Kingsbridge Line and Bruce Road 7. They are buried near to the graves of their daughter Christina and her husband James Campbell. Their headstone reads: In | In Memory of | Memory of Donald | Mary McKenzie | Wife of Died | Donald Dec. 3, 1864 | McKenzie 48 years | Died Native of | Nov 14, 1893 Ross Shire | Aged Scotland | 71 years
