Note: I have had a fairly difficult time determining the parents of my great-great grandmother, Anna McKenzie. On her death record in 1896 in Michigan, her parents' names were listed as Daniel and Mary McKenzie. Clearly the informant of that record knew little about Anna's father or mother. I found the marriage record for Anna and her husband Alexander McLeod, from 1875, and she listed her parents there as Donald and Mary McKenzie. I found Anna in the household of her apparently widowed mother, in the 1871 census in Ashfield Township, North Huron County, Ontario, Canada. Also there in that household were siblings Alexander and Christina. I have found the marriage records of Alexander (1879) and Christina (1887) in Ashfield Township, and both clearly list their parents names as Donald McKenzie and Mary Cameron. I have now what I am fairly sure is the grave of Donald and Mary, in the South Lochalsh Cemetery in Ashfield Township. They are buried near to the graves of daughter Christina and her husband James Campbell. From the headstone of their grave, I have learned that Donald McKenzie was born in about 1816, in Ross-Shire, Scotland, and that he died on December 3, 1864, apparently in the Ashfield area. I know that Mary was born in Scotland, but I do not know if she was also born in Ross- Shire. Donald died relatively young at the age of 48 and Mary lived another 29 years, until November 14, 1893.
