Note: Alfred Francis Shearlock was born to his parents T. H. and Peliga Shearlock. He was born on February 1, 1846 in Missouri, probably Cape Girardeau County. On December 28, 1875, Alfred married Ida Jane Kenner in Ste. Genevieve County, Missouri. There were ten children born to Alfred and Ida: Arthur Lee (1877), Mary Jessie (1878), William Montreville (1881), Estelle Peliza (1882), Walter August (1884), Mabel Frances (1886), Annie Blanch (1889), Amy Flora (1890), Paul (1893) and Grace Ellen (1895). Alfred was listed as a lawyer, in the 1870 census; as a machinist in the 1880 census; and as a miller in a biography for his wife Ida from 1940. In that biography, it is reported that Alfred built the mill which was later known as the "Brickey Mill." From some newspaper stories I found, this was apparently built about 1890. Alfred died fairly young, on August 18, 1897 in De Soto, Jefferson County, Missouri, leaving Ida to raise their children. Alfred is buried near to Ida and their son Walter in the Gamel Cemetery in Festus, Missouri. -Rick Waggener =========== I transcribed these records of Alfred before he married, for another researcher: From the 1850 Federal Census of District #14, Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, page 401, taken October 3, 1850, household 863; from ancestry.com, image 121 of 292: T.H. And another good mill there would be of great benefit to the farmers, by increasing the demand for wheat, and stimulating prices. It is thought that Mr. SHEARLOCK will be induced to put up the mill. He is a practical and experienced miller, and has the confidence of the people. =============== From the JEFFERSON DEMOCRAT; Thursday, March 27, 1890: Mr. Alfred SHEARLOCK, of DeSoto, is coming back to Festus, having bought the farm and residence of James CAMPBELL, who will start on a visit to his native Scotland. We have also heard that he intends running a planing mill and lumberyard. Mr. SHEARLOCK has had considerable experience in that line and we have no doubt he will make a success of it. Besides, he is an energetic stirring business man and quite a valuable acquisition to any community. =============== From Jefferson Democrat; Thursday, April 10, 1890: Rumors are about that Alf SHEARLOCK contemplates building a planing mill here soon. This would be a crack business and Alf the man for it. He has been in the grist and saw mill business from boyhood up, and I am convinced so far as I know him for 20 years, that he would make a success of it. =============== Alfred is buried in the Festus Methodist Cemetery, AKA the Gamel Cemetery, (off Lee Ave. in Festus near Highway A and Interstate 55). His headstone reads: To the memory of Alfred F. Shearlock Born Feb. 1, 1846 Died Aug. 18, 1897 At Rest Shearlock There is also a Mason symbol on the headstone. Alfred's wife Ida and son Walter are buried nearby.
