Susan McPhedran found this story about the church and their membership. Also mentioned is Donald Cameron, son of Alexander's mother's brother Roderick Cameron, and first cousin to Alexander. No doubt this had something to do with them coming to this area: From HISTORY OF THE JUMBO VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH by Margaret Mackintosh Before the turn of the century, the Presbyterian Church of Canada began establishing mission areas in the west. One such area was from Fort Macleod to Nanton-High River. By the early 1900’s, as the settlers took their homesteads, there were many people in outlying areas who wished to have church services. Seven miles east of Granum, then known as Leavings, one such district was called Jumbo Valley. From a rise in the land to the west looking east, there is a deep gentle slope. It is not known who gave this area its name, but to all who lived in this district, it was known as Jumbo Valley, where later a school and church were established. Jumbo Valley was settled by people of many nationalities, quite a few coming from Eastern Canada and the British Isles, and among these were many Presbyterian Scots. Before they could erect a church building, services were held in their homes. Sometimes there would only be a service every two weeks or once a month, depending on how often a minister could cover the large territory from High River to Fort Macleod. Travel was on horseback or by horse and buggy, and a minister could sometimes visit three congregations in one day. Jumbo Valley was included in this mission field, known as the Presbytery of High River.... .... The children of Mr. and Mrs. A. Stephenson well remember the services being held in their home. More regular services were then held in Jumbo Valley School. The earliest record of services in the school is 1908 and the annual meeting was chaired by Peter Henderson. The first records that can be located lists the membership of 1906. Thesse include Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Stephenson, Mr. and Mrs. Alex L McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. Murdock Matheson, John MacKintosh Sr. and his daughters, Jessie (later Mrs. Dan Munro) and Isabella (Mrs. J. Morrison), Mr. and Mrs. Frank Matheson, Donald Cameron, and Daniel MacDonald. ================ From Ancestry.com. Border Crossings: From Canada to U.S., 1895-1954 [database on-line].
