Notes
a. Note:   Christie Anna McLeod was born to her parents Alexander and Anna (Mackenzie) McLeod, on February 3, 1877, in Ontario, Canada. At the time her parents were living near to the family of her father's parents, Archibald and Jessie McLeod, in West Ashfield Township, Huron County, Ontario, Canada. They were near to the town of Lucknow. She was apparently known as "Annie" in the early stages of her life. She and her family immigrated to the United States in about 1887, presumably coming then to Houghton County, Michigan. Presumably her father was drawn there to work in the copper mining industry. At that time, this area was the center of the copper mining industry in North America. Annie's mother died at the age of 46, in 1896. Annie was the oldest daughter and apparently helped her father raise some of her younger brothers. Annie married John Knechtges on May 15, 1902, in Laurium, Michigan. There were four children born to them in Laurium. Around 1919 to 1920, the family relocated to Detroit, Michigan. The copper mining industry was on the decline and Detroit was booming. John apparently worked in the Ford factory in Highland Park and Annie reportedly worked in a laundry. In 1935, her husband John died. Annie continued to live in their house with daughter Bern and son Bud, until Bud married in 1937. After that she and Bern lived for a while with my grandparents, Ray and Margaret (Knechtges) Sturman. Bern was apparently very ill with tuberculosis. Sometime in this time period, Annie came to be known affectionately as "Myma" ( for 'My Ma') to everyone. This is the name I knew her as. After Bern recovered, Myma and Bern moved into an apartment in Highland Park. By 1943, they had moved to another apartment on Moss Avenue in Highland Park, which is where they lived until Myma's death in 1964.
