Emma is living in the household of her mother: ----- Emma; daughter, female, born March 1870, age- 30, single, born Wisconsin, father born- Germany, mother born- Wisconsin, occupation- dress maker, not unemployed last year, r/w's (I think this is an error and that Emma was actually born in March of 1869. -RW) ============= From the Polk's Directory 1901 of Laurium, from the Houghton County Historical Museum Library, given to me by Bruce Dunn: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk, bds 228 Osceola ============= From the Polk's Directory 1903-04 of Laurium, sent to my by Pam Welles: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk, bds 228 Osceola ============ From the Polk's Directory 1907-08 of Laurium, from the Houghton County Historical Museum Library, given to me by Bruce Dunn: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk, bds 228 Osceola Emma is also listed in Calumet, where she apparently worked with her sister Rosa: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk Vertin Bros., res Laurium ============ From the Polk's Directory 1910 of Laurium, sent to my by Pam Welles: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk Vertin Bros., bds 228 Osceola ============= From the 1910 Federal Census of Houghton County, Michigan; Calumet Township, Laurium Village, district #96, page 3A, taken April 16, 1910; from ancestry.com, district #96, image 5 of 26: Emma is living in the household of her mother at 228 Osceola Street, household #50: ----- Emma; daughter, female, age- 41, single, born- Wisconsin, father born- Germany, mother born- Wisconsin, occupation- saleslady/ department store, not out of work on April 15, 1910, not unemployed last year, r/w's ============== From Polk's Directory 1912 of Laurium, from the Sutro Library, San Francisco, CA: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk, bds 228 Osceola Emma is also listed in the directory in Calumet, where she apparently was still working at the same store. This store was apparently one of the biggest retail stores in the area: ****** Knechtges, Emma, clk Vertin Bros, res Laurium ============= John Knechtges sent me an Abstract of Conveyances for a particular piece of property, namely Lot 8, in Block 3 of the Village of Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan. This was apparently the property at 228 Osceola Street in what became Laurium, and on which the family house was built for Emily's parents and family. The document contains all transactions involving this piece of property, from it's inception in about 1877, until 1966. After Emily's mother Margaret died on May 7, 1913 all of the heirs of the property, namely her siblings, transferred their claim to the property to their sister Emma. This transaction was recorded on the anniversary of Margaret's death, May 7, 1914. Emma apparently lived there in the house, until her death on August 24, 1938. On September 15, 1938, her will was discharged and she left the property to her sister, Effie DeRosia, who sold the property soon thereafter.- Rick Waggener ============ From the probate file in June of 1913, for Emily's mother, Margaret (Steffes) Knechtges, listing the names, ages and locations of all surviving heirs: Name Relationship Age Residence Emma Knechtges daughter 43 Laurium, Michigan =========== From Polk's Directory 1916-1917 in Calumet, Houghton Public Library; given to me by Bruce Dunn: ****** Knechtges, Emma, dept. mgr., bds 137 Pewabic (This is a little confusing because she should have been listed as living in the home at 228 Osceola in Laurium. Compounding this confusion is the fact that there is a 137 Pewabic in Laurium, which happens to be where her brother Jacob is listed as boarding. Emma is not listed in Laurium in this year. Perhaps they moved out of the family house for a couple of years after her mother died.-RW) =========== From the 1920 Federal Census of Houghton County, Calumet Township, Laurium Village, taken January 5, 1920, district 130, sheet 5a, household 97, address- 228 Osceola; from ancestry.com, image 9 of 22: Knechtges, Emma; head of household, female, white, single, age- 50, r/w's, born- Michigan, father born- Germany, mother born- Wisconsin, occupation- manager/ department store ----- Jacob; brother, male, single, age- 38, r/w's, born- Michigan, father born- Germany, mother born- Wisconsin, occupation- fireman/ boiler house (Emma and Jacob are back in the original family house.- RW) ============ From the Daily Mining Gazette, dated August 25, 1938. The microfilm for some reason wouldn't print out, but I did transcribe it: Local Woman Dies Wednesday Morning Miss Emma Knechtges, 69, of Laurium, died at her home, 228 Osceola street, yesterday after a two month illness. Born in Jericho, Wis., Miss Knechtges came to this district at the age of eight years and has resided here since. She was employed at the Verin Brothers store for 35 years, retiring in 1930. Surviving are the following sisters: Miss Effie Derochia and Miss Rose Knechtges of Chicago; Mrs. William J. LaBarge and Mrs. William J. Pirron of Detroit. All the sisters were here when death occurred. Funeral Services will be held Saturday morning ag 9 o'clock from Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in Lakeview. ============= According to the records of the Lakeview Cemetery outside of Calumet, Michigan, Emma was buried there on August 27, 1938. She is buried with her parents and I believe one or two of her siblings who died young. The family plot is in Section F, Lot 49. Her mother was buried there when she died in 1913. The unkown sibling or siblings were buried there in 1914, and her father was moved there from the Hecla Cemetery in Laurium, in 1927. There is a large headstone with just the name Knechtges on it. There are no smaller stones for any of the individuals.- RW ============= From Michigan, Death Certificates, 1921-1952, posted on-line by the LDS: Name: Emma Knechtges Event Type: Death Event Date: 24 Aug 1938 Event Place: Laurium, Houghton, Michigan, United States Gender: Female Age: 69 Marital Status: Single Birth Date: 17 Mar 1869 Birthplace: Jericho, Wisconsin Birth Year (Estimated): 1869 Father's Name: Jacob Knechtges Mother's Name: Margaret Steffes GS Film number: 001972732 Digital Folder Number: 005237572 Image Number: 03288
