Welsing ============= From the Copper Country News, Calumet, Michigan; a news item under Laurium, dated Wednesday, June 22, 1898, page 5: Miss Effie Knechtges arrived home from Fond du Lac to attend the funeral of her father. A strange coincidence happened about the time she was informed of her father's death. Miss Knechtges was out buying mourning goods to attend the funeral of her mother's brother (Joseph Steffes), and left at once for home, not knowing until her arrival here of her father's death, and at the same time she was home before the letter arrived announcing the death of her uncle, and of course had to break the sad news to her mother. Geurden is listed as being 25 years old, born in Hogensberg, N. Y., residing in Laurium, Michigan, and his occupation is a druggist. Effie is listed as 26 years old, living in Laurium, born in Calumet, Michigan, and as a clerk. Most of the people are listed as sisters, and everyone is listed as single.- RW) ============ John Weiss sent me Effie's obituary notice from the Chicago Tribune, July 1958: DeRosia- Effie DeRosia, beloved wife of the late Guerden; dear sister of Rose Knechtges; fond aunt of Mrs. Lillian Durack. Funeral Thursday, 9 a.m., from funeral home. 2335 E. 75th street at Oglesby avenue, to St. Philip Neri church. Mass 9:30 a.m. Internment St. Mary's South Shore 8-7717. (According to Rich Morgan, this cemetery is in Evergreen Park at W 87th & Hamlin Ave, about 3801 West 87th, Evergreen Park, IL 60805. She is buried in Section SW, Grave 850. Her sister Rose Knechtges is also buried in this cemetery. Apparently her husband Geurden is not. - RW)
