Froode: John's Obituary, from the Chilton Times - Feb. 27, 1926: John J. Steffes Dead. John J. Steffes passed away at his home on Baldwin Street about 4:00 o'clock on Wednesday morning following an illness of over a year. Mr. Steffes was taken ill in October 1924 and although his condition improved at times he was gradually losing ground and the past few months, it was evident that there was no chance for his recovery. His death on Wednesday morning was a relief from his long period of suffering. John J. Steffes, son of the late Theodore and Anna Maria Steffes, was born at Marytown on Nov. 29, 1859. In 1865 he moved to this county with his parents, locating on a farm in the town of Brothertown, now owned by Ignatz Ditter. On Feb. 10, 1895 he was united in marriage to Catherine Maier of Johnsburg at Jericho and they spent the first two years of their married life on the Steffes homestead near Jericho. In 1892 they purchased another farm in the town of Brothertown, now owned by their son, Albert, upon which they lived until December 1923 when they moved to Jericho. The following year they moved on Baldwin Street, in which the deceased passed away. Mr. Steffes was the father of ten children, nine of whom are living, a son passed away at the age of four years. The surviving children are Simon of Chilton town, Albert of the town of Brothertown, Mrs. Henry Thill of the town of Stockbridge, Mrs. John Steiner, Charlesburg, Mrs. J. Kopf, Chilton town, Mrs. Max Schuster, town of Brothertown, Misses Martha Isabella and Josephine at home. He is also survived by his wife, one brother, Anton Steffes of this city and 18 grandchildren. The passing of John Steffes has brought deep sorrow to his home and is likewise deeply regretted by his many relatives and friends, who held him in high esteem. He was a conscientious, hard working man who did all in his power to assure comfort for his wife and children and though they realize his passing was a relief to his intense sufferings, he will be greatly missed from the home circle. The funeral will be held today, Saturday at 9:00 o'clock from St. Mary's church, Rev. Fr. Pritzi officiating. The remains will then be taken to Jericho where another Requiem Mass will be read by Rev. Fr. J. H. Hyhn at Holy Trinity church and interment will take place in the Holy Trinity Cemetery. ============== From the Sheboygan Press, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, unknown date:
