Note: Archibald was born in Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada. His death certificate lists his date of birth as August 26, 1859, but from various records it appears he might have been 1-2 years older. Archie apparently spent about the first 20 years of his life in Tatamagouche. He is listed on the censuses there in both 1871 and 1881, but not on the 1891. He apparently moved to Monroe County, Michigan in the 1880's. He married Elizabeth McManus, in Saginaw County on November 17, 1891. He is listed as a blacksmith on numerous records. He died in 1910, apparently from complications of a drinking problem. Rick Waggener ================== Archibald is listed in his father's household in the 1871 Census; District: 199; County: Colchester; Sub District: E Tatamagouche; Dwelling 98; Family 102: "Henderson, Archie;" male; Age- 13; Prov/Bir- "N.S.;" Origin- Scotch; Rel- "P.C.L.P;" Going to School ================== Tom Belt pointed out the following census record from 1880, in Ash Township of Monroe County. It is not clear if it is Archibald, but it appears that it very well might be. He is listed in the household of an apparent brother named Joseph. There is no record of a brother named Joseph from Colchester County, but it is possible that he was missed because he left the area early. The census records from 1851 and 1861 only list the names of the heads of the household. It appears that this record seems to contradict the 1881 census record from Colchester County, Nova Scotia below. Tom suggested that perhaps Archie might have just arrived in his brother's household in about 1880, and that his mother still included him in their household in 1881, even though he had left. The most compelling element to this record is the fact that Ann McManus, sister to Archie's future wife Libbie, is living two doors down from this location. Also, although Archie is listed without an occupation, his brother Joseph is listed as a blacksmith, which is the occupation that Archie had later. I also found a marriage record for this Joseph, to Martha Brown in 1870 in Milford, Oakland County, Michigan, in which Joseph is listed as being from Nova Scotia. I also found what I think is Joseph, listed with Martha in the household of her parents in the 1870 census, also in Milford; and he is listed there as Richard, which makes me think his name actually was Joseph Richard Henderson. I will include this record here, in the hope that I come across something to settle this problem.: From the 1880 Federal Census of The Town of Ash, Monroe County, Michigan, district 172, page 41, taken June 28, 1880, household 382; from ancestry.com, image 41 of 47: Henderson, Joseph R.; male, age- 33, married, occupation- Blacksmith, born- Canada, parents born- Canada ------ Martha; female, age- 27, wife, married, occupation- Keeping House, born- Michigan, father born- Ireland, mother born- England ------ Harry; male, age- 7, son, born- Michigan, father born- Canada, mother born- Michigan ------ Archie; male, age- 22, brother, single, born- Canada, parents born- Canada ============== From the 1881 Census of Canada; Tatamagouche, Colchester County, Nova Scotia, Canada; district 19, page 46, family #205. This seems to show that Archibald was living in Flint. The witness John Brown was the husband of Libbie's sister Ann, and they were living in the Flint area. William McManus was Libbie's brother. This record seems to confirm the fact that Archibald's parents were William Henderson and Catherine Richards. -RW) =============== From the Federal Census of 1900, Monroe County, Michigan, Exeter Township, taken June 4, 1900, page 3B; ancestory.com, Monroe County, District #70, image 6 of 42: House #53, no apparent address; Henderson, Archibald; head of household, male, born- Aug 1857, age- 42, married 8 years, born- Canada, father born- Scotland, mother born- Ireland, immigrated in 1867, 32 years in U.S., naturalized citizen, occupation- blacksmith, working, r/w's, renting home/ home is a farm ----- Libbie; wife, female, born- Oct 1862, age- 37, married 8 years, mother of 3 children- all living, born- Michigan, parents born- Michigan, r/w's ----- Mary A.; daughter, female, born June 1892, age 7, single, born- Michigan, father born- Canada, mother born- Michigan ----- William H.; son, male, born- Jan 1896, age- 4, single, born- Michigan, father born- Canada, mother born- Michigan ----- Geneva; daughter, female, born- January 1898, age- 2, single, born- Michigan, father born- Canada, mother born- Michigan McManus, Patrick; servant, male, born- Oct 1855, age- 44, single, born- Michigan, parents born- Michigan, occupation- day laborer, working, r/w's (Archibald is listed as immigrated to the U.S in 1867. This appears to be an error, but I don't know for sure when he immigrated. I have been unable to locate him in the 1870 census in Michigan, and he is still listed in the 1871 and 1881 censuses in Tatamagouche. As noted above, he may be listed in the 1880 census in Monroe County. Patrick McManus is Elizabeth's (Libbie's) older brother. -RW) ================= From Vital Records, Monroe County, Michigan by Nancy De Graff Toll Charter, St, Patrick's Parish: "Henderson, Archibold- -d.
