Notes
a. Note:   Alexander was born on April 21, 1847, on the Isle of Skye, Iverness-Shire, Scotland. He came to Canada with his parents Archibald and Jessie (Nicholson) McLeod in 1849. They apparently landed in Montreal and moved rather directly to West Ashfield Township, Huron County, Ontario. Alexander grew up there in West Ashfield Township. This is also where he met and on January 10, 1875, married his wife Anna MacKenzie. Six of the seven children born to Alexander and Anna were born in Ontario. In about 1887 Alexander and Anna moved to Calumet Township, Houghton County, Michigan, where they spent the rest of their lives. On all the records I have found in the United States, Alexander was listed as being a carpenter. In his obituary, it was reported that he worked for years as a carpenter for the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company. I found an employment record from the Calumet & Hecla Mining Company which shows that he began working there in 1887, which must have been almost immediately after they arrived in the area. I also found records that his sons Daniel Kenzie, Archibald Angus, Alexander L. and Harry Roderick, all also worked at some time later for this same company. Alexander's wife Anna died in 1896, at the age of 46, apparently of cancer of the jaw. At the time of her death their oldest son Daniel was just 20 years old and the youngest son William John was just five years old. Alexander died, apparently at the age of 63, on December 5, 1910 in Calumet. He reportedly was injured in some kind of an accident at work, apparently struck in the foot by a bar of iron, at the Red Jacket mine shaft in about October, two months before his death. Apparently he had to have a portion of his foot amputated, and he never recovered from the complications of the accident and the surgery. He is buried in the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan, with his wife Anna, their son William, and their daughter Katherine and her husband Joseph Wilmers. I have learned that Sarah was the daughter of an Alexander and Margaret MacLeod. Also, that she and her parents lived in Kinloss Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada, and were members of the South Kinloss Presbyterian Church. This is the same church that Alexander and his family apparently were members of. Norman and Sarah are listed as immigrating in 1891. Since Nicholson was the maiden name of Alexander's mother, it seems pretty likely that either he and/ or Sarah were relatives of some sort. -Rick Waggener) ============= From the 1910 Federal Census of Calumet Township, Houghton County, District #105, page- 17A, taken April 23, 1910; from ancestry.com, #105, image 33 of 72: At 2113 Log (Rambault) Street, household #241: McLeod, Alexander; head of household, male, age 59, widowed, born Scotland- Gaelic, parents born- Scotland- Gaelic, immigrated 1887, naturalized citizen, occupation- carpenter/ shop, working on April 15, 1910, not unemployed last year, r/w's, rent home, home is a house ----- John; son , male, age- 19, single, born- Michigan, father born- Scotland- Gaelic, mother born- Canada- English, occupation- teamster/ dishton? store, working April 15, 1910, not unemployed last year, r/w's Finlayson, Alexie; housekeeper, female, age- 59, married 34 years, mother of 5 children/ 5 children living, born- At Sea, parents born- Scotland- Gaelic, immigrated in 1910, occupation- housekeeper/ private family, working on April 15, 1910, not unemployed last year, r/w's ----- Pearl; niece, female, age- 9, born- Canada- English, father born- Scotland- Gaelic, mother born- at sea, immigrated in 1910 ----- Lawrence; nephew, male, age- 5, born- Canada- English, father born- Scotland- Gaelic, mother born- at sea, immigrated in 1910 (Alexie is the sister of Alexander. The children are actually her grandchildren, the children of her daughter Malinda Mae Finlayson (and who was apparently not married). Alexie and the two children had apparently just joined Alexander in Michigan, in the past year. Alexander would have been about 63 in this year. He would pass away in about eight months. Apparently this house was in an unincorportated area, called Rambault Town. -RW) =============== From the Michigan Technical University Archives, The Daily Mining Gazette, Houghton, Michigan, Page 6, dated Wednesday, December 7, 1910. The late Mr. MacLeod was struck on the foot by a bar of iron while at work and it was found necessary to amputate a portion of the foot. It is believed that the shock to his nervous system from the accident and operation brought about his death. The deceased was a very well known resident of Calumet. He was particularly prominent among Scotch people of the district and was a staunch member of the Calumet Presbyterian church. He was born in Portree, Scotland on April 21, 1849 and came to America when a young man, settling in Huron county, Ontario, Canada.
