Notes
a. Note:   I have pretty conclusively determined that Mary was born in Illinois, and most likely in or near Nashville, in Washington County. The John Wesley Garr book from 1894, gives her date of birth as September 15, 1817. From what I can tell, her mother's family, the Crislers, were in the Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky area for some time before 1810. The Garr book lists her parents, Jesse Moore and Elizabeth Crisler, as being married in Kentucky in 1810, and I have found a marriage record indicating that it was in Jefferson County. Apparently sometime after their marriage and before Mary was born, Mary's parents moved to Washington County, Illinois. I found her father there on both the 1820 and 1830 censuses. It appears that Mary is listed in her father's household on both those censuses. In the wedding record for Mary and Reuben, Mary was listed as living in the household of her uncle Francis A. Moore, "of the City of Louisville." He apparently also gave her away in the wedding ceremony. Jesse is listed as her father, and as being "of Illinois." These records seem to indicate that even though her family moved to Illinois, they maintained contact with family members back in the Louisville area. The date for their marriage in both the Garr book and the wedding record in Louisville is May 3, 1835. Mary would have been about 17 years old at the time, and Reuben was almost 20 years older than her. In the Garr book, Mary's father Jesse is listed as dying in June of 1835, which would have been just after her marriage to Reuben. Most of the records and events that I have for Mary while she was married to Reuben, from 1835 until 1884, would seem to be covered in Reuben's notes. Mary and Reuben seem to have spent the first five years of their marriage living in Jefferson County, Kentucky, most likely in Louisville. I found them listed there on the census in 1840. Reuben was presumably still working as a river boat pilot or captain. In 1841 they moved to Rush Tower in Jefferson County, Missouri. This is about 50 miles due west of Nashville, Washington County, Illinois, where Mary apparently spent most of her childhood. Perhaps Reuben knew about the area from sailing on the river. I have tried to determine what exactly happened to Mary, during the approximately 19 years between the death of Reuben on December 24, 1884 and her death on January 1, 1904. I had a report from family sources that not too long after Reuben's death, Mary sold the family farm for $5000, and moved to Festus, Missouri. There were a number of her children living there at that time. The newspaper story below does seem to indicate that about three months after Reuben died, Mary did move to Festus. She was reportedly living there with her youngest son William Horace Waggener and a Dr. Brook. The biographical account of her son John Edmund Waggener, written in about 1887 or 1888, seems to report that she was living back on the farm at that time. I have been unable to locate any record of her selling any of the parcels of land that comprised the family estate. All of the five parcels of land listed as belonging to Reuben in the 1876 atlas, seem to be listed in the names of her sons Stokley and John, in the 1898 atlas. The parcel that had the family house on it is listed under Stokley's name in 1898. At this point, I still don't really know much about what happened to either Mary or the farm after Reuben's death. I do know that Mary was buried in the Festus Methodist Cemetery (aka the Gamel Cemetery), in Festus, with a number of her children. (Reuben died on December 24, 1884, and it appears that at least for a time, Mary moved out of the family house near Rush Tower, to the town of Festus, which was also known at the time as Limitville, Tanglefoot, and Derby City. RW) =============== After Reuben died Mary applied for a widow's pension, based on Reuben's military service in the War of 1812. Reuben had applied for and had been receiving a military pension since about 1871. There are several letters in the pension file which I obtained from the National Archives, which are written by or about Mary. They seem to document some of the previously known facts of their lives. ****** In a letter dated April 13, 1885, written by their neighbor and apparent friend, John N. Conn Jr., Justice of the Peace and apparently based on statements made by Mary about herself and her life, he writes: "... She further states that she was married to the said Reuben Waggener in the County of Jefferson in the State of Kentucky on the seventh day of May A.D. 1835, by one Rev. Samuel Noel who was a Cumberland Presbyterian Minister; and she further states that her name before her said marriage was Mary Moore; and she further states that neither she nor the said Reuben Waggener, her husband, had previously been married;..... and she further declares that the following have been the places of residence of herself and her said husband since the date of their marriage, Viz: Louisville in the State of Kentucky, and at Rush Tower in Jefferson County in the State of Missouri. .... and that her residence is in the town of Derby City, County of Jefferson, State of Missouri, and her post office address is Festus, Jefferson County, Mo." (Dave Halleman reported that Derby City was a subdivision next to Festus that became part of Festus, it was South of Main Street, East of Henry Street, and laid out by Alfred F. Sherlock in May 1883. This seems to confirm that Mary had moved to Festus at least for a while. All the other records including the one below, seem to put the marriage date as May 3 rather than May 7. RW) _________________ ****** In another letter dated May 2, 1885, also written by John N. Conn Jr. on what would have been the eve of Mary's 50th wedding anniversary with Reuben, he writes: "...Mrs. Mary Waggener who being duly sworn says that she was married to Reuben Waggener in Jefferson County, Kentucky on the 3rd day of May A. D. 1835; that she and her said husband lived together up until the time of his death, Dec. 24th 1885, nearly 50 years; but she is unable to furnish any record evidence of their marriage." (Mary seems to have subsequently received the pension in 1885 or 1886, and to have received it up until her death in 1904. At the time of her death she was receiving a pension of $12 a month. RW) =============== ******From "Biographies of Franklin, Jefferson, Washington, Crawford and Gasconade Counties, Missouri, Heritage Books,1995" (Courtesy of Christine Merseal): "...He (Reuben) died January, 1885. The mother is still living on the old farm, and of the twelve children born to her marriage, nine are now living, and our subject (John Edmond Waggener) is the sixth." (This account appears to have been written in about 1887-88, and would seem to contradict the accounts above. Perhaps Mary returned to the family house a little later. Mary was 81 years old and probably thinking about the end of her life. -RW) =============== From the book "Genealogy of the descendants of John Gar, or more particularly of his son Andreas Gaar, who emigrated from Bavaria to America in 1732," by John Wesley Garr and his son John Calhoun Garr; published in 1894: Mary is listed as person #1964 and Reuben is listed as #5854.
