Note: Harry Roderick MacLeod was the sixth of eight children born to his parents, Alexander N. McLeod and Anna McKenzie. He was born in Lucknow, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. He moved with his parents to Houghton County, Michigan when he was a year or two old. His father worked there in the copper mines. Harry's mother Anna died when he was ten years old. I can only assume, that despite the support from his older siblings, he was forced to grow up rather quickly. I know that at some point, probably in around 1903 or 1904, he worked for the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company, where his father worked. From the personnel records there I believe he left there to work in a mine in Kendall, Montana. I do not believe he was there long, as I believe he was in Detroit, Michigan by 1910. I believe that Harry was the first member of his family to move to Detroit. On October 17, 1917, Harry married Anna Marie "Minnie" Nelson, in Antrim County, Michigan. This is where Minnie's parents were living, but I assume he met her in the Detroit area. I know that after their marriage they lived the rest of their lives in Detroit. In his draft registration record from 1918, Harry is listed as working for the Cadillac Motor Company as a foreman. In all the subsequent records I have, he is listed as working for an auto company, so I assume it was Cadillac Motors. Harry and Minnie had three children. The first, Betty Louise, was born in September 1925 and died five months later. Their second child, Louise Marie, was born May 22, 1926. She also died rather young, at 12 years old in 1939, of appendicitis. Their third child, daughter Marjorie born January 14, 1930, live on past them. According to Jeffrey Carpp, Harry had a problem with alcohol and he was apparently drinking at the time his second daughter Louise died. Reportedly he never drank again after that. However, he died the next year on July 21, 1940. He is buried in the Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia, Michigan.- Rick Waggener =========== From the 1900 Federal Census of Calumet Township, Houghton County , Michigan, Precinct #4, taken on June 12, 1900, district 172, sheet 19a, page 129, in the rented house at 2113 Log Street; from ancestry.com, image 37 of 50. These records are the property of the Michigan Technological University and Copper Country Archives, housed in the Van Pelt Library of Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan. The collection consists of 3 x 5 inch cards filled out by various clerks, apparently as a person was hired: Name: McLeod, Harry R. Pay book #12238 Began work: 466? Position: Railroad laborer Birth date: August 4, 1886 Birthplace: Lucknow, Ont., Can. Immigrated: 1887 Marital status: single Last employed: Kendall, MT school Reads/ writes: yes (The Calumet and Hecla Mining Company is the same mining company Harry's father and a number of relatives worked for. This doesn't say when he started working or when he stopped. My guess would be that he started in about 1903 or 1904, when he would have been 16 or 17 years old. According to the note above about his last employment, he apparently went to Montana to work at some point, where some other relatives also went. This Kendall, Montana is located in Fergus County, Montana. It is now a ghost town. Harry's brother Alexander was married in Kendall in 1908, so I assume they went there together. I don't think Harry stayed in Montana long, as I believe he was living and working in Detroit by 1910.- RW) ============ In the obituary of his father in December 1910, Harry is listed as being in Detroit, with his younger brother William John "Jack." I believe that Harry was the first member of the family to move from Houghton County to Detroit. ============ I don't have the date or location of the following story about their wedding, but assume it was early October 1917 in Antrim County, Michigan: Married A beautiful home wedding occurred at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Nelson in Custer township, at 4 p.m., Oct. 2, when Harry R. MacLeod of Detroit, was married to Miss Anna Marie Nelson. The pastor of the M. E. church, W. P. Mosher, performed the ceremony. The home was beautifully decorated with flowers. The brother of the bride, Oscar Nelson, served as best man, and sister, Miss Agda, as maid of honor. The ring service was very pretty. Two little girls served as flower maids, one of them presenting the ring. After congratulations, a fine luncheon was served. The guests of the most part consisted of relatives of the family. The bride and groom departed on the midnight train for their new home in Detroit. ============ From Michigan Marriages 1868-1925, posted on-line by the LDS: Groom name: Harry R Macleod Groom race or color (on document): white Groom age: 32 years Groom birth year: 1885 Groom birth place: Canada Bride name: Anna M E Nelson Bride race or color (on document): white Bride age: 28 years Bride birth year: 1889 Bride birth place: Sweden Marriage date: 02 Oct 1917 Marriage place: Antrim, Michigan Father of groom name: Alexander Mother of groom name: Anna Father of bride name: Otto Mother of bride name: Marie Groom previous wife name: Film number: 2342719 Digital GS number: 4210011 Image number: 364 Reference number: v 1 p 63 rn 153410 Collection: Michigan Marriages 1868-1925 =========== From Ancestry.com.
