Note: I know that Archibald was born in Portree, Isle of Skye, Inverness-Shire, Scotland. Although the headstone on his grave says that he was born in 1817, all the other records I have found seem to show he was probably born in 1819. In the 1841 census, Archibald is listed in the household of his parents Malcolm and Ann MacLeod, in the Village of Portree. In the 1841 census Archibald's father is listed as a farm laborer and in the 1851 census, he was listed as a fisherman. Although I don't know for sure what Archibald did there in Portree before he left in 1849, it seems likely it was a little of both of these occupations. Although Norma MacLeod was unable to locate the marriage record, I am fairly certain that he married Jessie Nicholson somewhere in the Isle of Skye area. Their first child Nancy was born in about 1844, so it is pretty likely it was before this. Their second son Alexander was born there in 1847. I know that they sailed to Canada in August of 1849, landing initially in Montreal. Their third child Alexandria, was born on the Atlantic Ocean, on the trip over. I believe that Archibald and Jessie went rather directly to West Ashfield Township, in Huron County, Ontario, because they are listed there in the 1851 census, living in a log shanty which apparently Archibald had built. I know that Archibald spent the rest of his life there, because he and Jessie are also listed there on the 1861, 1871, 1881, and 1891 censuses. All of their other children were born there in Ashfield Township. Archibald is listed as a farmer in all the census records. I am not sure if they lived at the same location, but I think that quite possibly they did. I believe that the current location of the farm was on the south side of Zion Road, about midway between Kingsbridge Line and Kintail Line. This was Concession 12, Lot 8, and apparently the farm was 100 acres. He officially purchased it in 1872. In 1871, about half of it was cleared of woods, with eight acres for pasture land, ten acres for wheat and oats, 28 acres for hay and one acre for the garden and orchard. They raised cattle, milking cows, sheep, pigs and horses. It appears from the census in 1871 that Archibald and Jessie were doing fairly well and were fairly prosperous. He had certainly come a long ways from being an apparently poor fisherman and laborer in Scotland. In the Township map of 1876, Archibald is also listed with another piece of property, somewhat smaller, about half a mile east, also apparently on the south side of the current Zion Road, between Kingsbridge Line and Kerrys Line. Generally speaking, their farm was southwest of the current town of Lucknow, which is where Archibald and Jessie are buried, in the South Kinloss Cemetery. Although this cemetery was associated with the South Kinloss Presbyterian Church in Luckow, it appears that at least initially, they were members of the Presbyterian Church in Ashfield. Archibald was a founding member of this church who participated in the building of the original building, and was an original Trustee of the church. The church was located on Kintail Line, just north of Zion Road, and at least at this point with most of the trees gone, within site of the McLeod farm. I do not know at this point, when they became members of the South Kinloss Presbyterian Church in Lucknow. After Archibald died in 1894, Jessie went to live with a couple of her children living in the Chicago, Illinois area. She died there in 1911. I know that many of their children immigrated to the United States. Mary (Hill) was the first of her siblings to immigrate to the United States, apparently in 1877, and to the Chicago, Illinois area. Her brother Angus and sister Alexandria (Findlayson) were next, moving initially to North Dakota in about 1880. In about 1888 brother Malcolm moved to the US, apparently near to Mary (and husband Robert) in Chicago. About that same time brother Alexander moved to Houghton County, Michigan. In about 1890, brother Angus apparently moved from North Dakota, and later also on to the Chicago area.
