This farm is apparently very close to the farm of John McManus' parents. This John Murphy must be a relative of some sort, although I have yet to determine how. I think he must be related to one of John's grandmothers, Bridget (Murphy) McManus or Ann (Murphy) Ward. This record also indicates that John was married and that his wife had died. -RW) =========== The following was so washed out that it was almost unreadable, but I am pretty sure it is the household of John's father Owen. This was the family farm previously owned by their father Owen McManus. As far as I can tell, these brothers all remained in this house until their deaths. I don't have an address, but I have determined that the house was on the northwest corner of O'Hara Road at Martinsville Road. The property was 80 acres and it fronted on O'Hara Road and ran along Martinsville Road up to Carleton- Schofield Road. According to Jerry Waggener, this house burned down some time after the last brother William died in 1946. -Rick Waggener) ============== From the 1930 Federal Census of Exeter Township, Monroe County. November 2, 1932" ============= From the Monroe Evening News: November 3, 1932 Carleton. Nov. 3- John McManus, age 81 years, a life long resident of Exeter, died at the McManus homestead in that township, Wednesday at 9:40 a.m. after an illness of two months. He was born October 4, 1851, in Exeter township on the south bank of Stony Creek, a mile from the homestead where he spent practically 78 years of his life. He was the oldest of twelve children, eight boys and four girls, the son of Owen and Alice (Ward) McManus, early pioneers of this vicinity. He was married to Libbie Newberry of Ash Township, more than 60 years ago and the daughter born to them died 6 months after the mother who died 58 years ago. He leaves four brothers, Thomas, Patrick, William and James of Exeter township and one sister, Mrs. Ann Brown of Flint. The funeral will be held at St. Patrick's Church, Stony Creek, Saturday morning at 9:30, with the Rev. Fr. James Melling officiating, Interment will be in the family plot of the Stony Creek cemetery. ============ In the 2nd cemetery of St. Patrick's Parish, on Exeter Road near Carleton, Michigan, there is headstone labeled: York McManus Maria York John McManus 1840-1889 1851- 1932 (I am pretty sure this is the grave of John and his Aunt, Maria (Ward) York. I'm not sure why they are buried together. John was listed as the sponsor of the baptism of Maria's daughter, Elizabeth York. They both seem to have spent a good portion of their lives as widower and widow, so perhaps they lived together before Maria died in 1889. -RW) ============= From Michigan, Death Certificates, 1921-1952, posted on-line by the LDS: Name: John Mcmanus Event Type: Death Event Date: 02 Nov 1932 Event Place: Exeter, Monroe, Michigan, United States Gender: Male Age: 81 Marital Status: Widowed Birth Date: 04 Oct 1851 Birthplace: Carleton, Michigan Birth Year (Estimated): 1851 Father's Name: Owen Mcmanus Mother's Name: Alice Ward GS Film number: 1973025 Digital Folder Number: 005240277 Image Number: 00289
