Notes
a. Note:   Charles Thomas Sturman was the son of Sarah Sturman, who was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Batchelder) Sturman. On his birth and baptismal record, his father's name was not listed and Charles was given the surname of his mother. Charles was born on February 11, 1835, in Crick, Northamptonshire, England. Charles was reportedly raised primarily by his grandparents, Samuel and Sarah Sturman. I found him in their household in the 1841 census in Crick, Northhamptonshire. I found the 16-year-old Charles living as an apparent worker on a farm in Warickshire in the 1851 census. Charles' grandparents and mother were also living nearby in that census. Charles married Eliza Hill on September 27, 1863, in London. The 1871 census record shows that their first child, Eliza Sarah Sturman, was born in Warwickshire in 1865, and their next child, Charles J. Sturman, was born in 1867 in London. In the baptism record for Eliza Sarah, they are living in Hoxton, London about a month afrer she was born. This seems to indicate that they had moved from Warwickshire to London just after the birth of Eliza Sarah. In the baptism record for son Charles James, it shows that they were living in the De Beauvoir Town area of London in September of 1867. In the 1871 census, Charles and Eliza were listed as living at 20 Newton Street in Old Town Hoxton, which is a district of London. The two children listed as having been born in London, Charles and Nell, were born in Hackney and Shoreditch. All of these areas of London are in the Hackney Borough of London, which seems to be just northeast of central London. Charles' occupation in the 1867 bapism record is listed as warehouse man, and in the 1871 census as a wholesale grocer and porter. In 1872, the year after this census record, Charles and Eliza moved from London to Michigan. They joined a number of relatives who had immigrated there earlier. These included Charles' uncle Samuel Sturman, Jr., who had moved in about 1842; his uncle William Sturman, who had moved in about 1850; his uncle Thomas Sturman, who had moved in about 1858; his uncle George John Sturman who had moved around 1862; and finally his grandfather Samuel Sturman, Sr., who had moved between 1862 and 1870. Charles and Eliza settled in Redford Township in Wayne County, and were living quite close to his uncle Thomas Sturman. His uncles Samuel Jr. and William Sturman were also living fairly close, about 3-4 miles north of Redford, in Southfield Township of Oakland County. His uncle George John Sturman had settled about 70 miles east, near to Chatham in Kent County, Ontario, Canada. Charles' grandfather, Samuel Sturman, Sr. had apparently been living in the different households of his four sons in the area. Samuel Sr.died in 1874. It is pretty clear that Charles was a farmer for the rest of his life in Redford Township. He is listed as a farmer on the 1880 and 1900 census, as well as on the directory below from 1886. I believe that his farm was located on the south side of 7 Mile Road, just west of Greenfield Road. This farm was subsequently passed on to his son William, after the death of Charles in 1904 and Eliza in 1908. Rick Waggener =============== Carolyn Kenison sent me copies of the pages of a Sturman Family Bible, which came from the family of George John Sturman. In the page listing births the following is recorded about Charles: Chas. T. Sturman Born Feby. 11 1835 =============== From The National Archives of the UK; Kew, Surrey, England; General Register Office: Registers of Births, Marriages and Deaths surrendered to the Non-parochial Registers Commissions of 1837 and 1857; Class Number: RG 4; Piece Number: 894: No. 122 Charles Thomas the Son of Sarah Sturman of Crick, in the Parish of Crick, in the County of Northampton, who was the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Sturman, was born on the eleventh day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five. And was solemnly baptized with water, in the name of the Fathre, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, on the second day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty-five by me William Dalby (This form was slightly modified by having Sarah Sturman's name listed where the child's father would normally be listed, and the place where the mother should be listed is crossed out. The way the day of birth the "eleventh" is written, does appear to look a little like the "Seventh," but looking closely at it, it clearly is the "eleventh." This also corresponds to the Family Bible record noted above- Rick Waggener) =============== From England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975, posted on-line by the LDS: Name: Charles Thomas Sturman Gender: Male Christening Date: 02 Sep 1835 Christening Place: WESLEYAN, DAVENTRY, NORTHAMPTON, ENGLAND Birth Date: 07 Feb 1835 Mother's Name: Sarah Sturman (This is an abstracted transcription of the above record, and the transcriber read the date in error to be the "Seventh," rather than what I am pretty sure is the "eleventh" of February. The later also corresponds to the Family Bible Record.- RW) =============== From the 1841 British Census of Crick, Northamptonshire, District 6; from ancestry.com, image 4 of 9. Charles Storman; servant, unmarried, age- 16, occupation- agr. servant, born- Crick, Northamptonshire ============== I found this record in the 1861 England and believe it may possibly be Charles. I do not know that he ever went by his middle name Thomas, but I could not locate him anywhere else in this census and his age and location of birth are correct. Also, he is listed as a Porter, which is the same occupation he is listed as in the marriage record below from 1863. He is listed in the household of a James Allen in Bridge Hill, Belper, Derbyshire. In household 85, page 14; from ancestry.com, image 14 of 26 Thomas Sturman; boarder, unmarried male, age- 25. occupation- Porter on Midland Railway, born- Northampton ============== Agnes Sturman apparently transcribed this marriage record from an original copy of the Register Book of Marriages in the Parish of Kensington, in the County of Middlesex, in the possession of one of Charles' and Eliza's children: 1863- Page 82, No 164 Marriage solemnized at the Parish Church in the Parish of Kensington, in the County of Middlesex. 27th September 1863 Charles Thomas Sturman Full Bachelor Porter Residence: 13 Camden Grove Eliza Hill Full Spinster Residence: 13 Camden Grove Father: John Hill Married in the Parish Church according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church by me, Thomas L.
