Note: Eliza Hill was born on July 22, 1840 in Welton, Northamptonshire, England, to her parents John Hill and Martha Carr. On September 27, 1863, Eliza married Charles Thomas Sturman, in London, England. A total of nine known children were born to Eliza and Charles. The 1871 census record shows that their first child, Eliza Sarah Sturman, was born in Warwickshire in 1865, and their next child, Charles J. Sturman, was born in 1867 in London. This seems to indicate that they moved from Warwickshire to London in this time frame. In the 1871 census, Charles and Eliza were listed as living at 20 Newton Street in Old Town Hoxton, which is a district of London. The two children listed as having been born in London, Charles (1867) and Nell (1869), were born in Hackney and Shoreditch, which are areas in London adjacent to Hoxton. Charles' occupation in that census is listed as a wholesale grocer and porter. Daughter Louise was born in 1871, apparently after the census and in London. In 1872, Charles and Eliza moved from London to Michigan. Charles and Eliza settled in Redford Township in Wayne County, and were apparently living very close there to the family of Charles' uncle Thomas Sturman. The other four children of Eliza and Charles were all born in Michigan, probably Wayne County: William (1874), John (1877), Rose (1879) and Jessie (1881). Charles was a farmer and he and Eliza and their family lived on a farm for the rest of their lives in Redford Township. I believe that his farm was located on 7 Mile Road, near Greenfield Road. Charles died in 1904, and Eliza died November 3, 1908 in Detroit, reportedly from some sort of accident involving coal gas poisoning. They are buried together with several of their children, in the Mount Hazel Cemetery in Redford. Rick Waggener ============== Agnes Sturman apparently had a Family Prayer Book that had been in possession of Charles and Eliza, and apparently later Agnes' father Charles James Sturman.
