Note: Charles James Sturman was second of nine children born to his parents Charles Thomas Sturman and Eliza Hill. He was born on March 19, 1867 in the Hackney area or district of London, England. He came to the United States with his parents in 1872. They joined relatives there in Redford Township, Wayne County, Michigan, and he presumably spent the rest of his childhood there on his parents farm. On January 1, 1896, he married Sophia Killet, also from England, in Detroit, Michigan. Charles and Sophia had eight children that I know of: Nevin Seymour, Florence E., Jessie R., Robert H., Reuben J., Agnes H., May and Blanche. On the 1900 census, he and Sophia and family are living in Detroit, and Charles is listed as a janitor. In the 1910 census, they are listed back in Redford Township, and Charles is listed as being a small fruit farmer. They were living near to the household of his brother William George Sturman and his sister Jessie Lee and her husband John. William George was living on what was his parents' former farm. In about 1916 Jessie and Sophis sold their farm in Redford and purchased a farm in Novi Township, Oakland County, Michigan, where they moved. They are listed there in the 1920 census and Charles is farming there. In 1928, Sophie passed away in Detroit. In the 1930 census Charles is listed as farming in Standish Township, Arenac County, Michigan. Charles passed away on June 15, 1947, in I believe Wixom, Oakland County. I know that their oldest son Nevin worked in the Ford Plant in Wixom. Charles and Sophia are buried in the Wixom Cemetery, in Wixom. -RW ============== From Northamptonshire Record Office; Northampton, England; Register Type: Parish Registers; Reference Numbers: 356P/43; page 22: Parish: Welton County: Northampton Year: 1867 Date of baptism: Sept. 1, 1867 Child's name: Charles James Sturman Parents: Charles Thomas and Eliza Sturman Abode: De Beauvoir Town, London Occupation: Warehouse man Performing ceremony: S. When we lived on the little farm seven miles from Detroit, the John Lee family lived across the corner from us and Uncle Will's family lived about a half mile down the road. Uncle Will's family lived in the house where grandpa and grandma lived. We all walked to school together- about a mile from where we lived. We were with Aunt Jess' family more than Uncle Will's. The Westlakes lived beyond your grandparents and also the Busha family. They were cousins of my dad. I was eleven when dad sold the little farm and we moved to a larger farm on Grand River Road, between Detroit and Lansing. Perhaps it was a year or so late that the Lee's bought a farm near New Hudson, about three miles from us. Esther is still living there. Esther and I have kept in touch by letters. Betty Wallace, younger than Esther, is a good friend of my niece, Marj Guirl. In fact they have a son and wife and two children in the Phoenix area. Betty and Brodie visited their children a few weeks ago and Marge and Nick had them there for lunch and I were there. They are lovely people. (The farm of Charle James' parents, which became the farm of his brother William, was on 7 Mile Road. I believe the farms of Charles James and John and Jessie Lee, were also on 7 Mile Road. Based on this accounting from Agnes, it appears that Charles James moved to Novi Township on Grand River Rd. in about 1916. Apparently John and Jesse Lee moved to the area of New Hudson, Michigan, about a year later. -RW) ================== From the 1920 Federal Census of Novi Township, Oakland County, Michigan, district 175, sheet 8a, taken January 16, 1920, household 194; from ancestry.com, image 9 of 19: Sturman, Charles; head of household, owns home with mortgage, male, age- 52, married, immigrated to the US in 1873, naturalized 1888, r/w's, born- England, parents born- England, occupation- farmer/ general farm ------ Sophie; wife, female, age- 47, married, immigrated to the US in 1891, naturalized in 1896, r/w's, born- England, parents born- England ------ Nevin; son, male, age- 22, single, r/w's, born- Michigan, parents born- England, occupation- farmer/ home farm ------ Agnes; daughter, female, age- 14, in school, r/w's, born- Michigan, parents born- England ----- Ruben; son, male, age- 16, in school, r/w's, born- Michigan, parents born- England ----- Robert; son, male, age- 16, in school, r/w's, born- Michigan, parents born- England ------ Blanche; daughter, female, age- 8, in school, r/w's, born- Michigan, parents born- England ================= From the 1930 Federal Census of Standish Township, Arenac County, Michigan, district 6-15, sheet 7A, taken April 19, 1930, household 153; from ancestry.com, image 13 of 18: Sturman, Charles J.; head of household, owns home, radio in home, home is a farm, male, age- 63, widowed, 28 years old at 1st marriage, r/w's, born- England, parents born- England, immigrated to the U.S. in 1874, naturalized citizen, occupation- farmer/ own farm, works on own account, currently employed, not a veteran ------ Florence E.
