Notes
a. Note:   From Genealogies of Virginia Families, from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. 2; Published Baltimore, Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1981: Page 529, This is part of an article titled "Notes on Kay and Allied Families" by Mrs. P. W. Hiden, Newport News, Va. (Originally published in April 1939) James Kay (1778-1835), younger son of Robert Kay and Peggy Long married in Culpeper County August 12, 1802, Sarah Waggoner (born August 30, 1784, in Culpeper, died in St. Joseph, Missouri, February 8, 1859), daughter of James and Elizabeth Waggoner. James Kay moved in 1817 to Christian County, Kentucky, where his will is on record (W. B. "I" 1835- 1837. p. 147). In this will, he mentions wife Sarah, children Robt. G. Kay of Illinois, William Kay of Tennessee, Gabriel Kay, James Kay, Thirza Bernard, wife of J. C. Bernard of Illinois, Helen Kay, Lucy Ann Kay, Mary Frances Kay (the last three under age) and granddaughter Mariam Cornelius Ingram "daughter of Jesse Ingram and Margaret Ingram his wife (who before marriage was my daughter and who is now dead) of Stewart County, Tennessee." For further details see Bible record given above. ================= From the "Kay-Pendleton-Neel Families" book by George and Margaret Rose, published by J. Grant Stevenson, Provo, Utah; 1969: The book makes reference to two family Bible records documenting the family of James Kay and Sarah Waggener. One originated from James' parents, passed through James, to his son Robert Garnett Kay, and then to his son Robert Garnett II. The other is from Julia Kay, daughter of their son William Kay. There was also a third Bible record, from James' and Sarah's son Gabriel. A transcription was made by Ida Lewis Pinkerton and notarized on March 15, 1937. Ida reported that the data was originally copied by her mother, Helen Steward Lewis from the Family Bible of her grandfather Gabriel Kay, while it was still in his old family home in Payson, Illinois. Helen was the daughter of Gabriel's daughter Sally Elizabeth Kay Stewart. Ida noted that at the time of her transcription, the Bible was in the possession of Mrs. Myrtle Lewis Kyser of Grenola, Kansas. I am not sure of her relationship to the family. The Bible record starts with the family of James' father Robert Kay, Sr. and includes the family of James and Sarah. The book also seems to lean significantly on the Tyler's Quarterly articles from 1939. Pages 35-37 "Fifth Generation: James Kay (1778-1835) James Kay, the younger son of Robert Kay and his wife, Margaret Long-Kay was born in Culpeper County on January 19, 1778 as is shown in the Bible of his father. He married August 12, 1802 in Culpeper County, Virginia, Sarah, the daughter of James Jones Waggoner and his wife Elizabeth Garnett-Waggoner. His will dated August 21, 1835 and proved October 26, 1835 confirms the entries made in the family Bible and shows that by his wife, Sarah, who survived him he had ten children. 1. Robert Garnett Kay (born 9/10/1804) [This is the father of the Robert Garnett II of Payson, Illinois who retained the Bible of Robert Kay with its many entries on the Kays and relations and passed it on to descendants.] 2. William Kay (b. 3.27/1807) M-1st Cynthis Burrus 3/25/1824, M-2nd Sallee Bailey, M-3rd Carolina August Pendleton 3. Gabriel Kay (b. 6/17/1809) M-1st Mary Bayliss 10/12/1827 4. Thirza Kay (b. 6/17/1811) M- James C. Bernard 10/6/1831 5. Margaret Kay (b. 1/30/1814) M- Jesse C. Ingram 8/23/1832 (She was dead at the time of her father's will was drawn 8/21/1835) 6. James W. Kay (b. 11/1/1816) M- Elizabeth Bailey 3/3/1836 7. Sarah Kay (b. 8/30/1819) Died 2/26/1839 8. Helen Kay (b. 2/22/1822) M- F. B. Kerchival 10/17/1839 9. Lucy Ann Kay (b. 10/30/1824) M- H. M. Atkins 11/26/1840 10. Mary Frances Kay (b. 12/5/1827) M- W. E. Clements 12/21/1843 The above Bible record started in the Bible of Robert Kay and continued by his son James Kay went, in turn, to his son Robert Garnet Kay, and thence into the hands of Robert Garnet Kay II. It will be shown presently that it was in the household of Robert Garnet Kay, brother of William Kay that William and his wife Caroline Pendleton visited in the summer of 1851 at Payson, Illinois, near Quincy. A similar record was kept by Julia Kay, daughter of William Kay and has a few additional items touching upon the brothers and sisters of William Kay. Her entries show that both Robert Garnett Kay and his brother, Gabriel Kay lived at Payson, Illinois, that William Kay married not only Mary Bayliss, but that he also married (2) Sallee Bailey, and married (3) Caroline Augusta Pendleton. James, who married Eliza Bailey, resided in St. Joseph, Missouri. Thurza, who married James Bernard resided in Quincy, Illinois. Margaret married Carter Ingraham (Bible record shows Jesse C. Ingram) and resided in St. Joseph, Missouri. Helen married Captain Frank Kerchival and resided in St. Joseph, Missouri. Lucy married M. Atkins and lived in Clarksville, Tennessee. Mary Frances married Dr. William Clements and lived in St. Joseph, Missouri. The fact that so many of the children of James Kay resided in St. Joseph may be explained by the fact that Sarah Waggoner-Kay, their mother, took up residence in St. Joseph at the death of her husband." ------------------------ pages 50-51 The following account of some of the later generation of the Kay Family was complied from two Bibles; one which is now in the possession of Mr. Robert T. Kay of 5454 Mary Lane Drive, San Diego, California, and the other in the possession of Mrs. Lewis Kyser of Grenola, Kansas. The Bible in the possession of Mr. Robert Kay is a family treasure and is that very Bible which Robert Kay carried from his home in Caroline County, Virginia, to Christian County, Kentucky. It appears that the Holy Writ was handed down from father to son in this order: Robert Kay, James Kay, Robert Garnett Kay, Robert Garnett Kay II, Ralph G. Kay, and finally to Mr. Robert Kay of San Diego, California. The record here reproduced appears in Tyler's Quarterly Magazine, Volume 20- pages 175 to 179. To this record has been added the vital facts concerning Garnett E. Kay who married Dorothy E. Minor and their descendants.
