Note: Sarah Sturman was the oldest of nine children born to her parents Samuel Sturman and Sarah Batcheldor. I believe that she was born on June 12, 1814 in Shearsby, Leicestershire, England, but a couple of records also list her as being born in Northamptonshire. The general area where she was born and lived is the general area where the three English counties, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Warwickshire, meet. We know that Sarah became pregnant in 1834, before she was ever married, and gave birth to her first child Charles Thomas in February of 1835, in Crick, Northamptonshire. She gave Charles Thomas her own surname Sturman, and apparently never let anyone know the name of his father. Charles Thomas was apparently raised for the most part by Sarah's parents, Samuel and Sarah. Charles Thomas, who was my g-g-grandfather, married in England in 1863 and in about 1872 moved to the Detroit, Michigan, USA area, where he joined other members of his mother's family. He lived the rest of his life there, raising nine children. In July of 1837, Sarah married a younger man, John Currin, in Crick, Northamptonshire. This location is also in the general area that Sarah was born and grew up in. Sarah and John had two daughters born to them. The first, Catherine or Caroline, was born in about 1840 and died quite young, apparently in September of 1841. The second, Sarah Currin, was reportedly born in Chapeltown, Yorkshire in May of 1842. Sarah Currin survived and later went to join other family members in the Detroit, Michigan, USA area before 1870, where she married and had two children. Sarah's husband John Currin was apparently a miner of some sort. He reportedly suffered some sort of serious back or spinal injury, presumably in some sort of mining accident. Reportedly in 1844, about a year and a half after this apparent accident, he contracted pneumonia and died at about the age of 24. This left Sarah a widow with a two year old daughter. In the 1851 England Census, Sarah was living in the household of her parents with her eight year old daughter Sarah Currin. I believe her oldest son, Charles Thomas Sturman, 16 years old at that point, was listed as a servant not too far away in Rugby, Warwickshire. We know that Sarah Currin later was a witness in 1863, for the marriage of her half brother Charles Thomas. In 1852, Sarah Sturman Currin married again in Rugby, Warwickshire, this time to an older widower, William Mawby. Two sons were born to Sarah and William; George in 1854 and Samuel in 1856. Both of these boys also eventually moved to join her mother's family members in the Detroit, Michigan, USA area, and live the rest of their lives there. Neither of them had any offspring. I believe Sarah Sturman Currin Mawby passed away on about January 27, 1866. I think she died in Northamptonshire, but it could have been Rugby, Warwickshire. The burial record I have found shows that she was buried in Crick Parish, Northamptonshire, England, on January 28, 1866. - Rick Waggener ============= From the Parish Records of Shearsby, Leicestershire, England: Baptisms solemnized in the Parish of Shearsby in Knaploft in the County of Leicester in the Year 1814 When baptized: June 12 Child's Christian name: Sarah Daughter of Parents name: Samuel & Sarah Sturman Abode: Shearsby Quality, trade or profession: baker By whom certified: J.
