Notes
a. Note:   Mrs. Valentine Honsberger Catharine, relict of the late Valentine Honsberger of South Cayuga, died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. F.H. Moyer, of St. Catharines, on Saturday last, June 20th. She had not been ill, in fact was up all day and until quite late in the evening. She had retired to her room, but was still dressed when the family were summoned, and she expired moments later from an attack of the heart. She was 81 years of age on the 12th of this month. Deceased was born in Louth Township, Lincoln County, and was a daughter of the late Henry Fry. In 1851 she was married to Mr. Honsberger. They journeyed to South Cayuga, when good roads, railroads and telephones were as yet unknown in the district. A journey from the Twenty to Cayuga in those days was as great an undertaking as a trip to New Ontario of the Northwest at the present time. The farm on which they settled, and on which they resided continuously until 1902, was, with the exception of a few acres along the Rainham road, a block of dense forest. There were no buildings, but they were hospitably housed for a year or more by Joseph Nash and wife (now deceased) who lived on the farm now owned by Isaac Overholt. During their long residence in South Cayuga both she and her husband were active in the work of the Evangelical church, to which they belonged, and held many important positions. Their religion was of a practical kind; not a religion of loud professions, but coupled with a consistent exemplary life. They exerted a great influence for good, and their names ever stood for integrity, honour and piety. Their home was always open, and the guest who entered there found a hearty welcome waiting him, it being a well known fact in the community that no traveler in need of shelter or food, not even a beggar or tramp, was ever turned from their door. A very pleasant event in the life of she and her husband was the celebration of their golden wedding on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28th, 1901, when she and her faithful husband received all their children and grand-children, and numerous other invited guests. Nature with her lavish gifts smiled upon them, and the day was all that could be desired. In the fall of 1902 they left the old home and went to reside with their son, Dr. J.F. Honsberger at Berlin, where Mr. Honsberger died in June of 1903. Since that time Mrs. Honsberger has lived with her daughter at St. Catharines. The remains were brought here by the G.T.R. on Tuesday morning, and the funeral took place in the afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, to the Evangelical church, South Cayuga. After service conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. Clemens, assisted by Rev. J.W. Kitching, the remains were interred in the Evangelical cemetery. The pall-bearers were Wm Bain, Thos. Bowden, S.A. Beck, Joshua Honsberger, Henry Huber and L. Boose. The surviving children are Mrs. F.H. Moyer of St. Catharines; H.F. Honsberger of Vancouver B.C.; Dr. J.F. Honsberger of Berlin; J. Oscar and Geo. H. Honsberger of Toronto.
