"Papa was a county commissioner and on the board of the Lincoln County Hospital. He was known as a strong young man. He got the name of 'Hoss' from carrying a wagon bed from PoGrab store to his house in the holler on his back. Someone told him if he could do it, he could have it. "
He farmed. He sold tombstones for a time.
"He was a bee keeper. Anytime there was a swarm in the community, folks would call him to come get a swarm. He never wore a net. They would not sting him. He only used a smoker when they robbed the hive. He was very soft spoken. He was thought of as a very wise business man. When he spoke, people thought highly of him." (Fred Sorrells)
"When I was a little girl, we would go to visit 'Momma' and 'Poppa' as we called them at their house in Petersburg. I remember that it was a big house surrounded by a rock fence. There were French doors and hardwood floors. It was very pretty. When they first married they lived in the house in the hollar in PoGrab. I have a bedroom suite that Poppa and Momma had when they first started housekeeping." This house in Petersburg later burned to the ground. (Sherry S. Finchum)
"The house in Petersburg had 3 fireplaces in it. The mantles were beautiful. All wooden. Many mirrors with what-not shelves." (Fred Sorrells)
