Note: RUTH'S MEMORIES Ruth was born in Lenoir county, December 14, 1913. Her family moved to Wake County when she was very young. She said she could remember roller skating on the hills around Hillsboro Street in Raleigh, NC when she was a child. Her mother Stella died when she was very young and she was being raised by her older siblings. Her father Willie decided to go to Florida to work the construction sites where he knew he could make more money to support them. Ruth then had to go live with her oldest sister Annie Rebecca Faulkner and her husband William, who lived in Rocky Mount, NC. During the summers she would visit with her first cousins Florence, Percy, and Elizabeth Gainey of Greene County, NC. During these visits Ruth learned wonderful ghost stories that she would tell to her children many years later. She explained that they would huddle around the fireplace and scream every time Uncle Jesse would jump at them while telling these stories. Then they would rush upstairs to bed and jump under the covers to try to hold onto the warmth that they had just left of the fireplace. Of course there were giggles and more discussion of the stories and eventually they were threatened with spanking if they didn't go to sleep. She truly loved her cousins and these times they spent together. On one of these visits she met the man she would later marry. His name is Jack Wainwright and they were married on June 10, 1931 and the rest is history. Written by: Amaryllis (Amy) Wainwright Hunt As told to me by my mother. Address listed is before they had zip codes. This was a rural area in Greene County. We were share croppers on Lamuel Dawson's Farm. Address was taken from old Social Security Card. It did not have any dates on it, so I don't know how old it was. Source: SSC & family researcher Amaryllis (Amy) Wainwright Hunt-2003
