Notes
a. Note:   My name is Amaryllis (Amy) Wainwright Hunt and these are the memories that my Aunt Clara Turner shared with me when I would visit her at Beverly Nursing Home in Greenville, North Carolina. She is a lovely woman and just as strong and determined today as she was when I would see her when I was a child. She and Uncle Felix gave to us lovingly and willingly many thing that my parents couldn't afford to buy. One Christmas my mother sat us all down and explained that we would not be getting gifts from Santa that night, because he had to give those things to other children that needed them much more than we did. We were sad, but we were loved and knew that Mama wouldn't lie about those things and we settled down for sleep. The next morning our stockings were full of candy, nuts and fruits. We were so suprised to find anything that we just ate without question. Finally, we dressed and started out to play, and there on the back steps was a huge cardboard box. It was filled to the top with presents! Everyone got something. I got a Barbie doll and was I ever thrilled. She was wrapped in an old shoe box with pretty Christmas paper. All my brothers and sisters including myself got something new to wear. That was a wonderful Christmas. Later in life I found out that Uncle Felix and Aunt Clara had played Santa for us and we all will forever be greatful for that day and all the other good times that they gave to us. I love them both dearly! These are the memories that I have of them. Amy W. Hunt-Family Researcher-2006 As a little girl, Clara grew up in the Round Tree area of Greene County, NC. Mrs. Maggie Sowers (Clara's mother) was driving a Model T Roadster, when suddenly little Clara, age 3 or 4, fell from the moving vehicle. She wasn't hurt and jumped up and started running after the car shouting " Don't leave me Mammie". She told me about her Aunt Gladys and Uncle Joe. They always had wonderful things to eat at their house. She would sneak off down the path to their house and shortly after, her Mother would come to get her. She spanked Clara soundly and put her in the corn barn for sneaking off and begging for food. Aunt Clara laughed and looked at me, gave a wink and said," Mother ruled the roost at our house!" Clara Sowers Turner was a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Kinston, NC. She was a member of the Pilot Club. She worked for Wilbur Jackson Rider, owner of Rider Publishing. She also wore many hats as she helped with all areas of printing for Lenoir County News and Jones County Journal. She began her employment in 1950 and retired in 1968 with 18 years of service. Aunt Clara and Uncle Felix were married in 1936 by her Uncle Henry Tull Sowers, a Baptist Preacher.
