Notes
a. Note:   March 2002 Information for children's names was supplied by Steve Letchworth of Goldsboro, NC. Steve is a descendant of Green B. Letchworth . Letchworth's in North Carolina The Letchworth name in North Carolina goes back to around 1700 in Chowan County, North Carolina. I've found a couple of records from this era. The one I believe started the line is Joseph Letchworth, Sr. ,who received land and imported himself, wife Sarah, Tabitha Lee, Susanna Edwards, Charles (a negro) into Chowan County, NC in 1702. He most likely came from Virginia or Calvert County, Maryland or possibly from another county in North Carolina. I'm not sure who the others that came with him were, perhaps family members, but his wife must have died, because in 1705 he married Mary Smith, daughter of Charles Smith. Joseph acquired land in Hyde County and moved there. Records indicate he bought and sold land throughout the 1700's before finally settling in Craven County in the mid 1700's. Joseph once owned land on the Pungo River before selling it to a Smith. Smith Creek on the Pungo was once known as Letchworth Creek. I am not sure of Joseph's children. I know he had one son named Joseph, Jr., and Elizabeth Cox, wife of Abram Cox, was Joseph's Letchworth,Sr. daughter or granddaughter. Joseph Letchworth Jr. wrote his will in 1776. Joseph Jr. married Elizabeth_________ and lived in Craven County (near Pitt County). This is where documentation ends and speculation begins. These are my theories: In 1792 there is a marriage record in Craven County, NC for Fredrick Letchworth and Nancy Taylor. I believe Fredrick to be the son of Joseph, Jr. and Elizabeth. Two hundred years ago the Letchworth Family lived east of present day Ayden, NC. The 1810 census of Pitt County lists Fredrick Letchworth and family. He then turns up in Greene County in 1820. In 1830 there is a Fredrick, Fredrick, Jr., Furniford and Thomas in Greene County. I believe these to be his sons. By Steve Letchworth May 2002 1790 US Census North Carolina Craven County- has only one Letchworth listed. That is Frederick Letchmore. Is there a missing generation here??? Fredrick and Nancy were living in Craven County, North Carolina under the name "Frederick Letchmore", and in Pitt County, North Carolina in the 1810 Census. No Letchworth's were listed in the 1815 Pitt County, NC Tax List. 1820 US Census North Carolina Greene County Letchworth, Frederick 1 male-under 10 1 male-10 to16 1 male-20 to 30 1 female under 10 1 male slave under 14 3 male slaves between 26 and 45. His wife appears to be deceased at this time. 1830 US Census North Carolina Greene County Letchworth, Frederick 2 males under 5 1 male 5 to 10 1 male 30 to 40 1 female under 5 1 female 30 to 40
