Amaryllis (Amy) Wainwright Hunt-Family Research-2002 Names in North Carolina Murphy by Jane Hall It's 543 miles from Manteo to Murphy and when you get there you find that long before your arrival Murphey had lost an "e" that rightfully belongs in it's name. When and how, nobody knows. The county seat of Cherokee County was named for Archibald DeBow Murphey (1758-1837, one of North Carolina's leaders who pressed for progress through public schools, canals and roads. In 1822, Murphey obtained title to land in Tennessee for the University of North Carolina. He was successful, it is said, because of his shrewdness as a legislative trader. Before that, however, the town at the end of the beautiful Konnaheeta (Cherokee, meaning extra long) Valley was called Huntersville in honor of Col. A.R.S. Hunter who is said to have been the first white man to build a home in what is now Cherokee County. The drive from Manteo to Murphy is long in more ways than one. As the miles whip by the traveler crosses several geological ages, the Continental divide, and a number of mountain ranges. When he arrives, he finds himself in the most remote and most western of the state's commercial centers. A Murphy citizen is closer to the capitals of six other states than he his to Raleigh. It is easier for him to swim in Lake Erie or the Gulf of Mexico than to visit the North Carolina Coast. Charlotte is twice as far away as Atlanta. Murphy is located at the juncture of the Valley River and the Hiwassee River, both of which are within the corporate limits of town. The two rivers feed Hiwassee Lake and when the lake is full, the rivers become deep estuaries. Alternately, therefore, Murphy is a riverside town or lake-front town, depending on the water level. Nearby is the site of Fort Butler which was built in 1837-1838 to hold the Cherokees when they were rounded up for their tragic march West. Nowadays, Murphy is a busy bustling trading center for a wide area south of Bryson City and west of Franklin. Tourist trade hums along and there are a number of busy manufacturing plants in the town.
