 1920 Jonathan Taft born 17 Sep in Russellville, Ohio; (father Lyman Taft of Massachusetts).
 ca. 1837: Became a school teacher in Brown County area of Ohio.
 1841: Began study of dentistry under Dr. George D. Teter in Ripley, Ohio.
 1842: Married Hannah Collins.
 1843: Entered private practice in Ripley.
 1844: Relocated private practice of Xenia, Ohio.
 1848: Presented first known professional paper, Irregularity of the Teeth.
 1850: Graduated from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery (OCDS).
 1854: Became Professor of Dental Surgery at OCDS.
 1855: Moved his private to Cincinnati.
 1856: Editor of the Dental Register.
 1856: Introduced the hot air blow pipe.
 1858: Became Dean of he Ohio College of Dental Surgery.
 1859: Wrote the textbook pupularly know as Taft�s Operative Dentistry.
 1859-60: Refused admittance to OCDS for Lucy Beaman Hobbs, who latter became the first woman to receive a degree in dentistry.
 1865: Initial discussions leading to the founding of UM School of Dentistry.
 1865: Lucy Beaman Hobbs accepted by Dr. Taft as a student at the OCDS.
 1868-69: President of the American Dental Association.
 1870: The Robinson/Lunsford murder case.
 1872 (June 23): Representatives of the Michigan Dental Association proposed the the Regents the need for a school of dentistry in connection with the state university.
 1875: After three years in the planning, The School opened in October of this year, with Dr. Taft as the founding Dean.
 1877: Dr. Taft after two years as the founding Dean of the new School, was inducted into the Michigan Dental Association.
 1879: Resigned at Professor of Dental Surgeryat the OCDS.
 1881: Received the honorary degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan.
 1883 ( August 6): Founded the National Association of Dental Examininers, elected first President of same organizaion. Reelected as President in 1884, 1885, and 1886.
 1884: Organized the National Association of Dental Faculty.
 1885: The Great Land Debate.
 1887: President, International Medical Congress, Section XVIII: Dental and Oral Surgery.
 1887: Wiliam Taft MD. DDS, Jonathan Taft�s son is appointed Proffessor of Operative Denistry and Histology at N.W. College in Chicago.
 1888: Death of his wife Hannah Collins Taft.
 1889: Death of his younger brother Calvin Taft, also a dentist. Married Mary Sabine.
 1899-1900: Seerved as President of the National Association of Dental Faculty.
 1891: The School of Dentistry moves into facilities previously occupied by the University Hospitals.
 1892: Chairman of the American Medical Assiciation, Section of Oral and Dental Surgery.
 1892-1894: Served on the Executive Committee of the World�s Columbian Dental Congress.
 1893: Death of George Watts, lifelong friend andco-editor of the Dental Register.
 1895 (April 30): Honored by the Cincinnati Odontological Society.
 1900: Retired and passed the editorship of the Dental Register to Neville S. Hoff.
 1903: Died October 16, 1903, age 84, of �apoplexy� or cerebral hemorrhage.
