Notes
a. Note:   This event actually happened with my Great Grandfather George G.Wakefi eld in 1899. I thought it might be of interest. George Wakefield Uses Shot Gun on W. S. Wailes--Old Feud newed WhichWi ll Undoubtedly End in Shedding of More Blood. Another chapter in the Wailes-Wakefield feud, of Johns town took place on Monday morning in when W. S. Wailes was shot in the head and facewi th a load of shot by George Wakefield. On Monday fore GeorgeWakefiel d came to town gave himself up saying that he shot Wailes andhe suppos ed him dead. He was placed in jail and information was filedagainst h im for assault with intent to do great bodily injury. Thecase came u p before Esquire Henderson in the afternoon while it waspending Buck W akefield, brother of the prisoner, came in town andwanted a warrant is sued for W.S. Wailes on the same charge. That hewas not hurt much an d was out with a gun looking for George Wakefield. Esquire Henderson, who has had considerable to do with this affair inthe past, refused t o have anything more to do with it, and refused toissue a warrant for Wailes or further prosecute Wakefield and soturned him loose. He was still in Centerville last night and at thiswriting that is the way th e matter stands. The Wakefield account of the story is about this: George Wakefieldha d been to the house of Henry Cross on an errand and coming away fromth ere between seven and eight o'clock, met W. S. Wailes coming downthe r oad. Wakefield had a double barreled shot gun and Wailes a largerevol ver. He says Wailes drew his revolver and shot at him, when hejumped behind a pile of posts and returned the fire with his shot gun.The fir st shot missed altogether and the second struck Wailes in thehead but the distance was so great that the shot did not penetrate theskull. Th is is the Wakefield account, and others who were withinhearing say tha t there were three shots fired. Wailes went to Planoand had his wound s dressed and Wakefield came to Centerville and gavehimself up. It is high time that something was done about this matter beforemurde r is committed. This affair has been going on for some years andin th e meantime two houses have been burned belonging to the Wailesboys an d about 70 tons of hay belonging to the father of these boys. There ha s been several fights and this is about the third shootingaffair. Al l these things give the community a bad name and swell thecourt accoun t which have to be paid by the tax payers.
