Note: tal No. 26 Fort Des Moines, Iowa, by paragraph 15, special orders 21, HQ USGH 26,1919, to investigate and report on such cases as are referred to it, for the purpose of determining the question of Line of Duty. Major Lloyd Thompson, Medical Corps Detail for Board: Captain Thomas G. Orr Medical Corps 1st Lt. Frederick C. Wilson Medical Corps. The board met on February 10, 1919. Present; all members.. The Board then proceeded with an investigation of the circumstances surrounding the injury of Private Clair Wakeland Co. "M" 360th Infantry From a careful examination of the patient, a thorough investigation into the circumstances attending the injury and a careful consideration of all evidence obtainable, the board finds: The above soldier was injured on June 29,1918 at Letrecy, France while returning from the duty of well drilling, to a place where his company was stationed. He was returning about 3.00am, by a course which lay through a Railroad switch yard. He was running along between two tracks, one of which was occupied by a Hospital Train, while on the other track was a moving freight train. He stumbled and fell, his right forearm being crushed just above the wrist by the car wheels. He was taken to Camp Hospital No.9, where amputation was the only available remedy. This difficult surgery was done in the lower third of the forearm on June 29, 1918. That the accident occured while the soldier was performing his regular duties and that it was not due to his own misconduct or vicious habits and that it was unavoidable. The Board therefore recommends: that the above injury which has resulted in a healed amputation of the right forearm, lower third, be considered in the line of duty. _____________________________ Lloyd Thompson, Major M.C.
