Obituary Of Charles Wakeland in The Times Record Near Millersburg,Feb 26,Mr Charles Wakeland died age 66.Mr Wakeland had been a resident of Mercer County for many years and was respected as a good neighbor and citizen by all who knew him.He was stationed at Rock Island for Military duty for a number of years prior to any settlement being made in this section. Also the lower portion had some words that were hard to read. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 1826 he served an apprentice-ship as a cabinet maker. after the apprentice-ship, he joined the regular army and went thru the Blackhawk Indian War. While in the army, he was stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo; Fort Armstrong, Illinois (now Rock Island) Fort Snelling Minn' and Niagara N.Y. After his marriage to Nancy Stone, the family moved from Ohio to the Millersburg, Mercer County Illinois area. This occured about 1854. He was the first drill master of the Millersburg Home Guard after theCivil War started. He tried to enlist, but was rejected because of his age and a crippled left hand. He lived to see the Union restored and his sons Charles B. and William Walter return home after four long years of War.
