Dear Ms. Strow, I played basketball at Dekalb High School in the early 1970s and was lucky enough to have had Ramer (Ramar? I always thought it was that spelling) as my varsity basketball coach. I just wanted you to know that I had plenty of experiences with many coaches, not all of them good, but Coach Wakenight was by far the best coach I ever had and, more importantly, I was extremely impressed by his integrity. He was a straight shooter who really cared about the students he encountered, and he went out of his way to help if necessary. I always knew that whatever advice he gave me, and he did give me plenty outside of basketball, I could feel that I would be doing the right thing by following that advice. If you asked me today who was the person I most respected from my almost 20 years in school, he would top the list. My memories of him (I can still remember what he looked like) will always be with me which I supposed is clearly verified by the fact that I have periodically looked on the internet to see if I could find what had happened to him in recent years, including today, after 35+ years. I was certainly sad to see that he had passed away almost 10 years ago.
